I sent a question over a month ago and have not heard a word from anyone! Won't be a member of this forum if this keeps up!! I sent Myles a question about 2 months ago (see previous page) and it took him a while to get back. He said he isn't getting the notices that he has questions here. Myles is a volunteer, just as is everyone else who gives their thoughts and opinions here, and if you look back at the 99 pages of his "Ask Myles" he has gone well above and beyond what a volunteer would do. If this is what hinges your participation here and you feel you need to leave then so be it. I do hope glitch gets fixed though so he can respond to everyone's questions.

I've got his telephone number somewhere. Myles is quite busy doing things that pay and don't pay. Great guy working with the homeless so I actually admire Myles for the work he does.

Hello Myles! I recently purchased a '79 Marshall 2144 that has 6550s in the power section. Any recommendations for 6550 tubes at a middle of the road price point? Thanks!!

Sorry for the late response. I was not receiving email notifications. This is one of the cheapest, one of the best, and one that is not overpriced as are many of the others. Keep in mind that a 6550 when pushed into distortion is raspy and sounds pretty bad. They were designed to stay clean and all bets are off when pushed to distort. If you want the same sort of power output (or higher in your Marshall) you may want to try KT88s. tubedepot.com/products/sovtek-6550we-power-vacuum-tubeSide note .... this tube is no more "gainy" than any other 6550. It's claim to fame is it works and is not as overpriced as most others.

Hey Myles. I've got an amp coming in that can take KT-88's and was wondering which of the new ones are worth trying. It also takes 6L6's, EL-34's and KT-66's. I have never tried to many 88's and have never bought any. I would appreciate your help. Thanks hymns Which amp? Amps with ultra linear transformers love KT88s. At this point the Chinese are better than all the Russian stuff. Penta Labs knows more about tubes than most anybody else and has been around for decades. You can get the stuff they are involved with from many sources. This is one I like - www.dougstubes.com/penta-kt88sc.html

I sent a question over a month ago and have not heard a word from anyone! Won't be a member of this forum if this keeps up!! How old are you? Just curious. One post and you already comment like above? Seems you did very little research, did not see I generally answer questions the same day or so thy are asked, and perhaps there is an issue? Perhaps (at my age) I died? Anyway .... rather than look back for your question as I did for the other folks due to me not being notified by this app I will wait for you to repost it.

Hi Myles, I wanted to get your opinion on Yellow Jackets NOS Tube Converter. I have a couple EL34 amps (SRZ and KT45) so these converters seem interesting in theory. Do you mind giving your thoughts and impressions? Thanks! tonereport.com/news/yellow-jackets-announce-nos-tube-converterDAILY NEWS Yellow Jackets Announce NOS Tube Converter By TR Staff @tonereportjuly 09, 2014 Tempe, AZ (July 8, 2014) -- The new Yellow Jackets NOS (New Old Stock) Tube Converter is a limited edition converter made for use in most amplifiers under 100 watts and using 6L6, EL34, 7027, or 6V6 output tubes. The converter lowers the overall power in your amplifier and gives your amp a unique vintage tone. This NOS Yellow Jacket is designed with an NOS 6AQ5 seven-pin miniature beam power tube, which is included with the converter. The 6AQ5 was used in many vintage practice guitar amps in the 1950s as well as many film projectors in the past. This tube is popular with DIY amp builders who often convert old film projectors into guitar amps. While electronically equivalent to the 6V6 with a slightly lower power rating, the 6AQ5 has its own unique vintage tone that sets it apart from its eight-pin big brother. As with all Yellow Jackets the 6AQ5 Yellow Jacket converter will operate in a Class-A self-adjusting cathode-bias circuit. All Yellow Jackets Tube Converters are handmade in the USA. Yellow Jackets are well respected, known for their high quality and ability to change the tone of your amplifier without the need of a technician. They are the converters that musicians love. For more information: Yellow Jackets - See more at: tonereport.com/news/yellow-jackets-announce-nos-tube-converter#sthash.G1oIKHcN.dpufMatt - They are the same thing as the GT version described a few posts above. They work pretty nicely and the tone is a matter of personal taste as they turn your grid biased amp into a cathode biased amp so the amp responds differently. I would not use them in a live gig situation as they get very hot and can be a bit unreliable at times, but in the home or studio they can be a cool tool. The standard devices from either GT or THD used EL84 (6BQ5) as the tube. I have no clue why they are selling these with the AQ5 unless they got a slew of the tubes for next to nothing and made a special offering of an "exclusive" offering, perhaps at a lower price .... or perhaps at a higher price (if Sovtek is involved in any way).

Hi Myles. Recently had my my MAZ serviced. Couple of new preamp tubes and new power tubes. It worked great for about a month then on a gig last weekend i plugged it in and one of the EL84s appeared to be red-plating, none of the other tubes glowing, electrical fire smell coming from the amp, and no sound.
I've since plugged it back in at home and it's operated flawlessly. I'm a little jumpy about taking it out to gig with this happening. Have any thoughts/ideas on what could be causing that? How to fix? Thanks for any info.

How to fix? Thanks for any info. One of the EL84s failed. If they were a matched quad one probably slipped a grid wire and bias ran away. If you bias resistor failed the other three tubes would have issues as well. You may have also had an intermittent issue on the socket. I'd pull the chassis and try to find the source of the electrical smell. There could be a burned resistor or something. Go ahead and replace the output set or have somebody test the output set. Chances are you will be fine and dandy if no damage that is visible is found. The MAZ 18 and 38 are very stout amps and Z transformers are high quality and over spec'd. Feel free to take some high res photos of the amp chassis and post a link for me to look at and I'd be happy to take a look.

Sniff around a bit as it is usually pretty easy to find something that is burnt even if it is something like a resistor on the underside that is not visible.

I have a Maz18 NR. Even when there is no instrument plugged in, the amp makes a "white noise", hissing sound as the volume and master are turned up. Is this normal or is it an indication of something else like electrical interference? Thanks.

I'm pretty new here and the app looks different than before so forgive me if in the wrong area. Could someone please lead me in the right direction. I have a 2x10 combo z28 that was great when I purchased it used from GC. Plenty of headroom especially with my JP strat. But now it seems I've lost the headroom and it breaks up way too early. It's still plenty loud but lost some of it's clean beauty. I've replaced all the tubes to try remedy the problem. I've notice a small metallic or glassy rattle noise after just buying the amp but it is really not noticeable on stage. It still has that rattle with the new tubes as well. Please any help would be so appreciated!!! Thx

I have just traded for a Z28 with a 112 Greenback and it sounds awesome but I wanted to check the bias before I took it out to play. It has Mesa 6V6GTA power tubes, Mesa Rectifier tube, EH 12AX7 preamp and Dario Mini EF86. When I checked the Cathode to plate voltage it read 410VDC measuring from pin 3 to ground. Does this sound correct? I set the bias at 28 MA. If I adjust the bias to get 375 VDC it runs way too hot. Do I need to get different tubes or set it different or am I doing something wrong. I'm using a Bias Rite probe. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

JJ tubes have always had good runs and bad runs. Unlike Reflektor, when problems are reported to JJ on a given batch they usually fess up or acknowledge the issue. In many cases they were aware of the problem and already had a fix in process.
