Myles, I'm going to replace the tubes in my Maz Sr. The local GC (Nashua NH) only has GT6l6 5's or 7's but no 6's. I'm opting to go with the 5's. Any issues? Uhh..errr...Froidian? Don't you mean EL-84's? ? IMO going from a 6 to a 5 or a 7 is negligeable (sp?) DOH! I meant EL-84's... I purchased GT EL84 5's. Do you see an issue Myles?

Those Radio Shacks were always the worst! Any of those that said Lifetime Guarantee anyway. Actually Radio Shack when having tubes labelled Realistic were generally great. Lots of gold pin Mullards and Telefunkens in the old days. My ol' Orange 120 ate 'em like tic-tacs. Guess that's why my ears are ringin' as I write this! They hated to see me comin' at the Rat Shack. "Self Service Tube Testing!" Here comes that guy that wants all the 6CA7's...

Russ, I'm not Myles, but FWIW I use Lehle switchers. They are wonderfully made and involved no tone loss whatsoever. Phase issues are also not a problem. Either the '1@3' or the 'Dual' should work for you. Check out www.lehle.com for details. Good luck, Daniel Daniel, Thanks for the feedback

Two Part Question - for Myles/Chad/Others:
1. My Maz Jr and Sr are extremely sensitive to 'dirty' power (i.e. hum/buzz). Has become quite an issue of late (old venues, make-shift show locations, causes terrible roar when kicking on OD's). Any suggestions (other than using Humbuckers)?
2. Did a 'live recording' last Sat - the power was horrible. Lots of hum/buzz - tried seperate circuits, ground lifts, etc., no matter. Sucked. Worst part, the line conditioners were pegged and some blinking - they go up to 130. Amp sounded "off" - a strange gainy edge - the entire show. Could 2.5 hours solid playing with power that hot hurt the amp?
Appreciate the feedback/suggestions.
Dan

Sounds like you're going to need a Furman or equal line conditioner and regulator. I bought one about 10 years ago. It will regulate the voltage so you always get 120 volts but if the line level is fluctuating up and down it makes a ticking sound in my amps so I quit using it. They've probably improved them now. Mine cost about $400.00. I would think with that much fluctuation and dirt in the power it would be giving the keyboard player fits, unless you don't have one. I know a B-3 would be unusable in that scenario.

I would think with that much fluctuation and dirt in the power it would be giving the keyboard player fits, unless you don't have one. There's a keyboardist. His keys gear admittedly has enough 'issues' that the power didn't make any difference. But his personal JBL Powered Monitor did fail partway through the show. The recording was doomed from the start...technical issues just added to it. Actually, I don't have anything positive to say about the entire 'experience' so I'll just not say anything...pretty dissappointed.

Chad~ I posted this over on the "Ask Zac" forum as well but since you have filled his shoes now, I thought I'd post it here for you
My question is re: Brad's acoustic (McPherson) which one does he play LIVE during his acoustic set on stage... is it still the MG-4.5XP? If so due to the off set sound hole technology on them do they require a p/u (sorry if that's a stupid question I'm new at this) I absolutley love the sound that guitar has, so woodsy and natural! Also I notice that Brad takes turns playing the Larrivee for some shows and others he'll play the McPherson is that just purely by preference? Or does it have to do with where he's playing (sound acoustics, indoor/outdoor venue) Thanks and btw...you do a fine job filling those shoes!!

mcpherson guitars and their people have been wonderful to work with and we really like the guitars we've gotten from them. the 4.5 is one and to be honest i can't remember the model number of the other. we used those and throw a larrivee in every now and then just to be different. the mcpherson's have their new under the saddle pickup installed in them. don't worry about asking a stupid question, i ask a bunch of them daily

I wasn't sure if the way they were built if they even used a p/u...so under the saddle-got it! Now if only I could afford to actually get one...robbing a bank is looking more and more enticing j/k. Thanks again! Karma and some...

Hey Chad... I was curious, because Zac has dissappeared from this forum...lol What pickups are back in Brad's 52/57 tele. Any changes to it? I was at the tampa show, rained like crazy if u remember...but he was using that guitar that night. Also, if you know, what size frets are on that guitar, it appears to be maybe dunlop 6105 frets? Just curious. Thanks Chad!

you could see the frets from your seat? geez dude. to be quite honest and serious with ya, i have not clue what size frets they are. the pickup is a hamel. i put that pickup in right after i came on board with brad a year ago. (one year next week oddly enough) and it only came out for 1 show. we tried something else in it, but brad played it about 1/2 a song and gave it back to me. i knew he would as soon as i heard him hit the firsts chord. it was just too hot for what brad likes. no offense to the pickup company, but it sounded like a humbucker. the hamel went back in and it sounds great. it's a little darker than the others, but it sounds really nice on 'alcohol'
oh do i remember that show. hotter than the hinges of hades out there, especially after it rained like that. i felt so sorry for anyone who got caught out in that weather. that was one of those 'you just can't get any wetter than you are right now' kinda rains. i love outdoor gigs, but the heat and humidity this year has ruined me for summer. i'm ready for fall right now

Chad ..... sent you hello on myspace and here is a hello here as well. Have talked with you in a few weeks so I assume all is going great!
By the way .... the gal I am sailing with now saw your myspace page and thinks you are really cute. I told her you were "taken" and that I was going to tell you what she said and she said I could tell you anyway.

thanks myles, things are moving right along here. we had the #1 party for 'the world' tonight. it spent 3 weeks in that spot on country radio. we're gearing up to knock out the rest of the shows for the year right now. change the show around a little bit too. other than that, just doin' whatever it is i do. glad to hear you're back sailing. i figured you were up to something since i hadn't heard much out of ya in awhile. i'm still planning a trip out that way soon. i want to come by groove tube and see you guys. where's your boat by the way? what's the chance of getting a little 'sea' time when i'm out there?

Coming to GT .... you bet .... door is always open to you guys but if the gang is coming please drag Gary in too. If you are staying without the Paisley gang my place is open to you if you need a place to crash.

Myles, Any experiance with an SS rec plug in a Route 66? If I was to try one with mt GT KT66Hp #4's what would you suggest the bias set at ?
I recently got a KT45 and love the stiffness even though it has a tube rec, I'd like to "tighten" up the low end of my 66.
Thanks, Curt

Hey Myles, a little while ago you were lamenting about no wind in SCal this time of year. My partner and I have been planning to go away on the boat for 3 days this week for about a month, but of course, weather and plans don't go hand in hand...40 knot headwinds with 6 metre seas on 4 metre swells doesn't sound like my idea of fun for two. I can guarantee there will be some 60-70 knot gusts along with it. SOUTHEAST COAST, Tasman Is to South East Cape: Wednesday: Westerly winds 30 to 40 knots tending northwest later at 15 to 25 knots. Seas 4 to 6 metres offshore decreasing. West to southwest swell rising to 3 to 4 metres offshore. Thursday: Westerly winds 30 to 40 knots easing to 15 to 25 knots and tending northerly later. Seas 5 to 6 metres offshore decreasing. West to southwest swell near 4 metres offshore.

Hey folks--new forumite here. Here's my question: I'm lookin for a 2nd amp for a two amp setup. I have a Fender HR deluxe that I love for cleans-----but I need a dirty amp. I'm lookin 4 a David Grissom type dirty. I'm not a loud player, use pedals, and play mostly tele and a PRS 24 standard. Rock/country/texas kind of style. The Rt66 looks like a candidate---but I'd probably have to use an airbrake as I dont play real loud. Suggestions on which Z would work would be appreciated!! Thanx in advance for any info!!!!!!

Thanx Tele-----Ive done more research and that seems to be the deal---the Maz jr. ,or the rt 66 with an airbrake. The master on the JR is definitely a plus.

That is how you are supposed to sail! Want to swap geographic locals for a few weeks. I have a Santa Cruz 52, A J109, and a Finot 6.5 meter you could borrow. On the two smaller boats if you go out and race and place in the first three positions the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina Del Rey will give you a gift certificate that is good for food, the gift shop, or any of the hotel restaurants. That is better than the typical trophy.

Hi Myles, I wanted to shoot you a message about a new set of tubes. I picked up a used maz 18r 210 a few months back, and I believe it's time for a new set...it's about 3 years old, and the seller said he'd never changed them before. This is my first tube amp, so also my first time buying tubes, and wanted to head the GT route and hit you up for a recommendation. I've been trying to learn as much about how this all works as I can. I'm a worship leader at my church, and use it primarily for that. I like playing it more clean than not, and wondered if 5751's might be a ticket in the first spots. Anyhow, I'm looking to get a full set (minus the rec. tube, since I've read those are good forever usually). I'd love to get them through you. Let me know a good course of action. Thanks so much!
