I do not use that method to adjust bias. You are putting a huge strain on things to drag down the power supply and that method assumes tubes are somewhat close to spec, and most are not.
If you send me the plate voltage with both tubes plugged in, and the amp in idle, I'd be happy to tell you where to set it using your bias rite.
Sorry for the very very late reply. I was never notified that this was posted.

DC here! I guess this question is for Myles! I have a Music Man 130/60W HD-130 head - bass and normal channel. Used extensively 3 decades ago when was playing bass i various bands. (the phase inverter is solidstate) power-tubes are 4 Telefunken EL34 from 1970:ies Have brought it to a local tech for repair and adjustments. He is going to rewire the power transformer ( + other small things ) - since in the mid/late 1900:ds we had 220 volt AC i Sweden. However today its 240 volts AC. ( just measured 239,1 volts ) The question is this: The tech recommended me to get 4 matched 6550 power tubes - insted of EL-34 with the the explanation that the 6550 tubes can handle higher plate/anode voltages. Is this entirely correct - if not what is the facts - ( no I dont belive he would deliberately lie to me - lol )
What make of 6550 tubes would you recommend to my old HD-130 Music Man Cheers: Dixiechicken! .

Dear Myles, I just got a route 66 and had to replace the power tubes. I want to rebias the amp and just wanted to check some info. I found this thread ztalk.proboards.com/thread/2578/bias-route-66 In which they say with a 5ar4 the plate voltage should be around 475 (depending on wall voltage). Would that be similar with a 5u4 rectifier? I feel like it would be higher in general with a 5u4? TBH I'm kind of a newb when it comes to biasing.

First of all, rectifiers are all over the place, even when of the same type. Rectifiers
Second, always measure plate voltage, do not guess. Load connected to amp, amp idling, volume off, tone at mid setting. Third, a real KT66 is a 25 watt tube, not a 30 watter. Keep that in mind when biasing.

I have an amp question.
I have a Maz. 18 NR. I use it with a Stratocaster. The speaker is a G12H Anniversary. The preamp tubes are three Svetlana 12ax7's. Power tubes are 6n14n's, and rectifier is a 5v4 (RCA, I think). I run a reverb pedal through the effects loop. And I mostly play blues.
Anyway, I've been reading a lot of posts and learned a lot about the amp. I loved the original tone but wanted to make it warmer (it was really bright) and break up sooner (it plays pretty clean with a strat at less than full volume). So far I've been able to accomplish the former but not the latter. And I really don't want to buy a boost or overdrive pedal, or an air brake.
Is there anything I can do to increase the amount of breakup? I have the volume control all the way up; and the treble and cut controls around 9:00. I was thinking maybe higher gain preamp tubes but the Tung Sols, Mullard and Genelex 12ax7's are all much brighter than the Svetlanas. Have I maxed out what I can do to get more break up from this amp with single coils?
And if I have maxed out what I can do with the Maz, is there another Dr. Z amp that would work better for me?

I have a Maz 18 Head w/reverb. Should signal still get through with my MV turned all the way down. Turned the master volume all the way down and could still hear the guitar, not loud but clear. Just wondering whats up with that if anything? Looked for answers but couldnt find any.

Chad….I bought 0001 Stingray head from Kevin F. but had to sale hardship. JaguarMan purchased and still owns. What is cleanest Z amp. Alan Welcome to Forum Alan. Unfortunately, Chad hasn’t been on in years. Whole lot of great people and information here! Check out some of Buddy Whittington’s stuff - great player and even better person. Also, check out Adam - another “fairly” new guy.

Of the current production line, I’d guess the ZLux and Maz38 may be cleanest. Cleanest ever I’d guess is the Surgical Steel as it was designed with a pedal steel in mind.

All of the Z amps I own do an exceptional clean tone. Depending on the flavor, volume, and headroom; we may be able to narrow it down some for you.

The Maz 38 was my first Z amp, and it is definitely clean unless you are playing concert level. Putting a very efficient speaker(s) in it along with a 5751 in the V1 spot will get you real clean if that's what you desire. as a reference, see what Buddy does with his Maz 38 and a Zbest cab, followed by Claptons solo

I'm looking for an amp that can cover Bassman/Coffin-logo JTM-45. I *think* the Route 66 should cover that, is that the right amp or should I look at other amps in the Z lineup?
