I love the sound of my strats through my maz. I despise the sound of my les paul - even after changing settings. Is it just the nature of the amp? Anyone else feel the same? Thanks in advance David

What was wrong with the sound in your view? What did you want the Maz to do that it was not doing?

By the way try plugging into the low input jack when you use humbuckers.

It is like the signal from the buckers is so strong that it hits the amp too hard. Hard to find a clean sound that I like at all. I am not going to get rid of it but I may buy another head to go with my les paul. Does anyone here gig with a humbucker guitar primarily and a Maz Jr. David

Also - I only use the low input. David

Use the low input, and keep the master high... like 3 o'clock and the volume around 11.

I always plug the les paul in the lo input. I feel that the humbuckers sound a bit too distorted with this amp. Yeah, it is hard to get a good clean with this amp using humbuckers and using a volume that can still keep up with the rest of the band

About a week after I got mine I replaced the V-1 tube (12AX7?) with a 12AY7. It became much more usable with HB's and hot P-90's. You might want to give that, or a 5751, a try combined with the Lo input.

Yes - the maz sounds better to me with the lester - the sg is for sale actually. Those are the only two humbucker guitars that I have tried. I doubt I will change out any tubes since I love the amp with my strat. No one has yet to say they primarily use humbuckers with this amp which is what I sort of suspected. Thanks everyone.

Hello Gents,
I gig out with a ES-335 played thru the maz jr I fnd that if I roll off the volume a bit on the guitar I can can get a pretty decent clean sound ... remember that you have limited headroom with this amp so just about any H/B guitar will overdrive this amp but I like the sound much better than my Tele with Fralin P/U's

I play my '68 paul custom thru the Maz jr all the time and get a great blues sound. I use mainly the neck pickup. Using the tone control and the cut knob, I can go from a BB King wooly sound with lots of sustain, to a twin sound, to a deep texas crunch. My Maz has 2X12s, however. When I played through a 2X10, I noted a bit of harshness with my Paul.
On the bridge pickup, I turn the cut up to about 75% of max and can get a great vox sound with the chimey sound like the Searchers on Needles and Pins or adjust it to get a piercing sound similar to some of Albert's old stuff.
I've used both inputs and prefer the high, though I note that most of the others posted prefer the low input.
Of course, different speakers and, possibly, different Pauls, so I can't say much more to help.

I play my PRSs all night through my Maz Jr. without a problem. A McCarty loaded with Duncans and a St22/trem with the stock Dragon 2 pickups. They share duties with a Fender Fat Tele and the only thing I change between the 2 guitars is mids, volume, and cut. And those are slight changes. I realize the PRSs don't necessarily have the same sort of grunt as the Les Paul, but they are loaded with humbuckers and perform great nevertheless!

Oh, BTW - I keep the amp just slightly dirty with added meat from a Tim pedal. I do lead boosts with a Sparkledrive on top of the Tim.

You willl drive the amp harder with hums and it will break up faster. You'll probably have to drop the front end gain on the amp to get the cleans and use pedals for the drive you're after...including some bumping of gain for the pedals used w/the Single coil guitars.
Also, you may try rolling the tone control on the guitar back a couple clicks if it's wide open. Might try the same with the volume control on the guitar.
Hums are all I've been playing thru my Jr. lately. PRS McCarty > Maz Jr 212. Lovely!
Into input "1", has a stock GT setup but a 5V4 rectifier for quieter recording - or a Phillips NOS 5AR4 for live shows; and, a Weber 30watt Alnico Blue/G12H30 speaker combo at the moment.
I use pedals for the dirt/grind and set the amp just on the verge of a light clip when clean.
These amps are great with Hums, P90's and single coil pups...love them for their versatility. Same amp settings for 3 completely different guitar types live w/o tweaking.

Good to know that I am not the only one gigging a maz with a humbucker guitar. Thanks for all of the responses.

i gig mine 99% of the time with a LP, 335, or gretsch 6120. i run the master on max and the volume about noon. turn the guitar volume down to about 3-4 and it cleans up fine. dime the volume and it definately breaks up. i use the high input as well. i use a barber tone press to push the cleans a little and a FDII for dirt and i don't need much of it.

cpsdawg,
How do you like the Grestch? Any feedback problems? how is the construction?

Gretch's sound beautiful through the Jr. They still feedback, but they do that with any thing.
Les Paul's have more output voltage ratings going into the front end of the amp. That means massaging the guitars settings, backing off here and there on the amp a bit...mids and some lows perhaps...and stop comparing it to single coils. There's no comarison, neither should there be.

I only use humbuckers and P-90's and they both sound great through the jr. I get a pretty wide tonal variation depending on how I set the amp. The jr. is way sensitive to speakers though, and 'buckers through the wrong speaker may not sound so good. It's worth experimenting if you can.

The speakers ( Z 10's) in the 2-10 Jr are perfect, not too woofy on the bottom end, and take all u can give 'em.

I mainly use PRSi and lately a Robin Avalon through my 2x10 combo. I do keep the master all the way up, and the volume around 10:00 - 11:00. I get a good clean unless I hit the guitar pretty hard. When I switch to singles (strat, etc.), I use a Fatboost to keep the levels even.
