I've got a 01 or 02 Jr with reverb. The other day my reverb driver gave up the ghost so I dug around till I found another ECC81, but before I put it in I tried an old RCA ECC83 I've got to see if it would be passable if I couldn't find another 81 in the house.
Now my 1rst question. Would using an 83 in the reverb driver slot give me the undesireable "crunchy" reverb, or will I just get some more gain?
Now the other question which might require more work. I'm using my reverb less and less. would it be harmful to get/make a good double male RCA cable to bypass the pan, and then run just another 12AX7?
Thanks for help in advance!

As for the tube question, you are better off with the 12at7 in the reverb slot, it just mellows out the reverb. Tubes are reasonable and these days we actually have some good modern tube choices, so go out and get some extras for your rig and tube swap and listen to the differences to see what you like. If you bypass the pan the circuit is still in the mix so you won't gain anything. The basic tone of the amp won't change. Only the NR version has a slightly different sound due to the design change.
