I have noiced an increased hiss when i turn up the cut control. Is this normal? I have gone from JJ's to RFT's to Svetlana in V1 and V2 recently and i stll have the hiss. Would this be a power tube issue? I have had the amp for a year, play 3-4 times a week, and have not replaced them. Is it time? and would they be the likely culprit for the hiss?

My Jr. 2x10 does it . I figured it was the nature of the cut control . Certainly not a bad hiss .

Mine has a *very* faint hiss too, but I rarely turn the cut up beyond about 9 o'clock. I think it's probably normal. Do you hear it even with nothing plugged into the input? Maybe a bad cable or something.
As for changing the power tubes, you're probably due after a year. EL84s are cheap and new ones will make a noticeable difference. And you can always save the current ones for backups.

That is the nature of a cut control. It's an expanded bright switch. Change tubes every day, like underwear...block all beams... wear a tin foil hat too...it'll still produce extra highs and some higher end hiss along with it!

Real normal to get this hiss, you won't really hear it in playing situations, but it sure helps get your sound out over the top of the band.... hence the term (cut control). Its very useful but upclose and when practicing you may need to keep it around 9 o'clock.

Adding cut, high mids or treble to an amp's EQ can, and likely will produce some hiss. You're right, under load this is not noticable and a cut control can be changed to put yourself above the mix as the night wears on and things increase in volume in general. Think of it as a "bright switch" on a variable resistor. And don't over use it. If you don't need that extra bite, or a mix to cut through, and can produce enough highs without it...then go easy on it! But complaining about high end hiss when boosting your cut control is like saying " ...when I put my foot on the accelerator, the car makes a louder noise!"

Just installed new groove tube el84's, very bad hum. Returned they will be! Got them from Musicians Freind. The old JJ's sound fine, but i need to have a spare set. Whats the best source for GT EL-84's on the web?

Forget the damn web! They're easily available at your local Music Store. Support the folks who actually invested family money into putting up a building, stocking it, and staffing it to serve you.

Tele, Of course i went to local GC first. While they carry Groove Tubes they had no EL84's in stock. I'm never surprised by this anymore. I wish there was a local music store to meet my needs but the nearest place is to far given my time constraints.

Also when I try to buy EL84s locally they're always out of #6s, usually all they've got is #4s. #6s is what Z recommends. Re: hiss If you turn the cut up all the way, that would be bright enough to part my hair on my amps!

The Groove Tubes that failed were #7's. I would be interested in trying a lower number to try to get the amp to breakup a bit earlier. As far as the Cut Control goes i think i got the hang of it, when using my tele, i keep it low (as well as the treble). With buckers, P90's or SD Phat Cats i have more room to increase the Cut. The Cut is a great tone shaper to adjust to the dynamics of the room, i like it.

Single Coiler, where in MA are you? There are 6 GC's between MA and NH. Also, check with Heath at Boston Guitar in Brockton.
With my Strat or Parker (even thought the Parker has Dimarzio HB Pups) it's a very bright guitar. I keep the cut around 11 and the treble at about noon to 1pm.
With my big'ole LP Custom, the cut has to go to about 2pm and treble to about 3pm. That ole LP is a just a hunk of dark wood...

Paul, I'm in Framingham. It's not so much the proximity factor as much as the time factor. With kids, work and a band it's just hard to carve out time to visit other GC's and that great shop in Brocton (used to get there when things were....simpler!)
Last night i spent 30 minutes on the phone with a musicians freind rep trying to process my power tube return. What a pain, I think I will stick with smaller tube shops on the web with better service from now on.
I'm gonna stop complaining. Life aint all that bad. I got a great amp and some perfectly good guitars! thanks all.

GC is a goofy chain. Let's think about this. No EL-84's in stock. That must mean they sell? No #6's? That must mean they're popular? Stock your stores with the items people want...that's a cardinal rule in retailing. What do people want? THE STUFF THAT'S SOLD OUT 'CAUSE THEY BOUGHT IT ALL! Gawd help us, guys... Part of the problem here is that GC is not an inderpendent dealer. They're a chain. They get supplied en masse, and take directives from a corporate office. And they couldn't care less, the mgrs. get paid no matter what their inventory reflects.

If anything makes a HISS......check for snakes !! ;D
I had trouble finding a good local ( and handy ) source for GT tubes in this area too . I finally purchased from the shop I got my amp at which is an actual store but a 6-7 hour drive . I purchased 2 sets of GT EL84 #6's from them over the phone and and had them mailed so I wouldn't have to pay shipping again anytime soon . I do have a few sets of JJ's as well that work fine .
