I'm pumping my ghia through a closed-back Traynor cabinet with a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. I noticed that the tone control at low volumes eg). 8 to 9 o'clock is very limited to about 3 to noon. That's where I get the sweetest tones from the tone control. However, when pushed to voulmes higher then 10 o'clock, I noticed anything above 1 o'clock can take your head off with the treble.
FWIW, it is the most responsive amp I've ever played, but I recently re-watched the Dean Parks video, and I'm looking where he has his tone set on the GC, and he seems to get a much fatter sound once he turns his tone knob at about 10 o'clock.
Mine would still be too thin on my amp.
What gives? Is this a normal characteristic of a GC tone knob?

Since I'm a recent Ghia owner myself I'm not the best one to answer, but my take on Dean's clip is that he's using a 4x12 cab and then you have to consider his DeTemple pickups, the Strat's wood type (alder or ash) and what speakers he has. All factors. I just put a Celestion G12H30 in my cab tonight and the tone settings are quite different from the Eminence Wizard I have.
My final thought is - ya' gotta find your own sweet spots.

Brighter to the left, more bass to the right. I find myself running the tone between 10:00 and 12:00 depending on how loud I am playing. I tend to lean to the brighter side as the volume drops. I do usa an attenuator so the amp is always cranked to 3:00 or WAO. ;D Spend some time and you will find the right settings. If the V30 is new and not broken in yet it will be much brighter and harsh untill it loosens up. Mine was awfull (the V30) at first but now it has totally smoothed out and sounds warm without the harsh edge.

I keep my tone between 12:30 and 3:00. The tone works the same when I crank the amp or play at bedroom levels. The tone control could be called a Fat control. As you turn it up, it sounds fatter and fatter.

Volume @ 11:00 and Tone @ 1:30 (Ghia head and either the 1x12 or 2x10 Z-cabs) and adjust guitar volume and tone controls to taste ;D
