I need more of an overdriven tone from my Maz 18 without the use of a pedal. I'm currently using an Avatar 2-12 cab w/celestions, and a TS-9 pedal that I would like to do away with because of all the noise. Is there a modification I can do inside this amp ????

Where are you running your master and preamp volumes at? I was a Marshall guy before I bought my Z. I could get as much overdrive as I wanted from the Marshall from the preamp with the master at any volume. When I went to the Z I didn't find the drive that I wanted until I added an AirBrake and started running the Master Volume at 2 o'clock or so. I get good sustain and crunch with the preamp running around 2 o'clock also. It really kicks in when I get the preamp up at 3 o'clock and beyond.

I've never heard of a successful mod on a Z yet. Save yourself the grief of bad mods and loss of resale value and just try different, higher quality pedals, would be my suggestion.

Sounds like your amp is worthless. Please send it to me along with a disposal fee (12 pack of beer) and I'll take care of it.
You'll never have to worry about the amp again.

The TS-9 may not be a good match, but I never tried one with the Maz Jr. My suggestion would be to try some other pedals, like the Xotic AC or BB. Right now I am using a Maxon OD808 into an AC Booster. Individually or in combination that gives me a pretty wide range of distortion tones and very little noise.

www.bentleyguitars.com This is a store just outside of kansas city. They have an Xotic BB used right now for $150.00. They also have a used Menatone Howie for $220, I think. The BB I really like but i like my King of Tone better!

the maz is very pedal friendly. I cant believe a ts-9 wouldnt sound good.If you want more gain, without useing a pedal, try a 7025 in V-1 or talk to Myles, and get a SAG-MHG kit. you can also get #4's for power tubes. The approved modifications by the Doc have been posted also. There are many ways to alter the gain structure, without modding the amp. The 1st thing I would try is different tubes in V-1. , as that tube really holds the key to your amps voicing. Useing a pedal, however will get you the dirt, without sacrificing your headroom. Hope that helps chip

Hello, I have a 18 NR head a Z-Best 2x12. I bought an AC booster and it does a nice job of dirtying up the tone. Its never going to be a Mesa Triple Rect, but thats not what I am after to be honest. I use the AC very little. Just for a little more dirt on faster runs and such.
Boy, one cannot "hide" behind these amps.....and I love it!

TS-9 with Analogman silver mod is amazing. That's my main OD in front of the Maz Jr. Really transparent with growl. A stock Ts-9 might choke up a bit and be nasally. I like the advice of a higher quality pedal (or pedal mod) or an Airbrake.
