Hey guys, I have been reading alot of positive things from users of the BB Preamp. I have a Fulltone OCD which I absolutely love with my Maz 18, but I am very curious as to how the two compare. Does anybody here have both and are using them with a Maz 18? What are the major differences between the two? Which one is higher in gain, and if so how much higer? Do they both clean up about the same when turned down (I think this is one of the OCD's finest qualities)? This site has been great for turning me on to great gear. Only trouble is that I cannot find a south Florida dealer who I could travel to to hear one (BB Preamp). All the dealers are very far north of me, and I do not want to buy one without hearing it first. Thanks guys!

Hi Mattman, I have the BB preamp and have tried the OCD quite extensively. The OCD to me excels with the gain set at 4 or lower after that I find it a little buzzy. So I tend to see the OCD as more of a booster which is how I use most of my drive pedals. The BB might have the gain at 1 o'clock or 2 o'clock. Volume cranked and the gain set halfway or lower on the rest of them. The BB's gain seems a bit more amp like on it's own and also has a great deal of boosting capabilities. It is a little darker and more compressed and compares favorably to the OCD in HP mode. I did not like the OCD in HP mode but preferred it in LP mode. The BB to me had what I found missing in the OCD in HP mode. I did like the higher gain setting on the OCD in LP mode though it was a bit dark. I like the compressed feel the BB has because it simulates the way an amp acts when you crank it up and it starts to compress and overdrive. It has amazing clarity and it is loud. Again, though it has a lot of volume it sounds like that great compressed, single stage Marshall sound. At lower gain settings it is a great clean boost but I use it more for a great overdrive rhythm sound then boost it either with an MJM Blues devil or RC booster for leads. I think the BB and OCD clean up the same though it does depend how much gain you are using. If they gain is dimed I think it is harder to clean the BB up with the volume knob. From what I remember I think the BB has more gain. In the end I think they are quite similar. I think the gain sounds a bit more natural with the BB as I find higher gain settings on the OCD to be buzzy. I still see the OCD as more of a boost pedal and have loved it in that vein. It is one of the more open musical boost pedals I have tried. Running them together would be a great! Running the OCD as a boost in to the BB might be a great lead sound. Dang it now you have me wanting to grab an OCD again. ;D Just to clarify the OCDs I tried and owned were all the first versions. I am curious to try the newer version. If it helps you can click on the link to my music page under my name and check out the 'voodoo' clip to hear the BB with the RXES. there is also a Teese RMC3 being used. Excuse the sloppy playing due to humungous action. Here is a link the Xotic pedals site and a few clips that helped me choose the BB. I like you did not get to try it before I bought it and I was not disappointed. Aruntang, thanks for the info! I have always wondered why people found the OCD to be buzzy at high gain settings, as my OCD never gets buzzy even with the gain cranked. I do, however, have the newer model (serial number 05980) so I think this may have to do with it. I heard changes were made to the pedal this year. As for the BB I listened to your clips and WOW, what a great sounding pedal! Maybe there is room for two overdrives on my pedal board! Also, when you say the BB has more gain than the OCD, can it cover the early van halen type distortion, or is it still a level below that? Thanks!

Hi Mattman, I think with humbuckers it definitely can cover the early Van-halen distortion. Again using the Maz is not quite like a 100 watt plexi cranked through an echoplex not to mention having Eddie's hands, but I am sure that you can find the 'tone' with the Maz18jr cranked and the BB set with the gain over half and the volume 3/4 quarters of the way up. It will be loud at this setting but it will rock. I play a strat and a tele and get wonderful violin tones ala EJ with the BB through the MAz38Sr. Check out Allan Hinds clips again when he uses his Strat with the BB for more of this sound. I think he does pull out the les paul as well to give you an idea what it sounds like with Humbuckers. I find the eq quite responsive on the BB so I don't think there is only one sound in it.

Arutang, On your Voodoo clip - how is the RXES set? Clean or already breaking up?
Thanks for any info, Yup.

Hi Yup, The settings were, Bass-1 o'clock Mid-12 o'clock Treble-between 10-11 o'clock Volume was at 10 o'clock-11 o'clock. Overdose is off. Guitar in to high input. The amp was set fairly clean. Maybe the faintest amount of hair on the notes if I really dug in. It is the same clean settings for the other two clips. For 'Voodoo' just the BB and the teese wah on top of that. Hope this helps. Welcome to the forum!

aruntang, Awesome job on the description of the BB..+1 karma for you. I have a Maz Jr and a BB and a OCD and an RC. Depending on the guitar I am using, flavor I need, all three sound incredible. My ES-135 with P-100's sounds amazing with the RC. My strats, tele, and LP's love all three. I like the way Xotic compresses. Sometimes, IMO, I would like the BB to have just a bit more range of overdrive (maybe I need an AC). I had my OCD modded by Don Butler, the tone man. He changed the volume pot to 500K from 100K. My OCD was purchased last year. Any of these OD's will sound great with your Jr. Don't forget the Zendrive (made in South Florida) just to stir up the mix. Have fun! Rick
