I just bought a Maz 18 head and 2x12 cab from Ebay. 1200.00 buks. I think it was a good deal.... I am looking for a country tone, a la' Brad Paisley. Twang with some "hair". Will this amp fit the bill?

You are going to be SO happy. I've got a Maz Jr 2x12 combo.
Remember, turn the tone controls with your eyes closed. At first you may think you've made a mistake because the amp is SO bright.
Most of us have been conditioned to automatically turn the treble up past midpoint on every other amp we've ever used. You will want to turn yours DOWN past midpoint. Also, the CUT control is very powerfull. Most MAZ users in the forum have their's set at 9:00 (o'clock). If you start getting above that, the amp turns to ice pick treble.
But these suggestions above are just that...suggestions. Turn the tone controls with your eyes closed and find the sound you want. You'll also want to consider tossing a new set of EL84 tubes in there. These amps eat them pretty fast compared to other amps, and you don't know how old the currents tubes are. Make sure you purchase matched sets...very important with these amps. Also, while your at it, you might consider getting a "Matched Phase Inverter" (MPI)...one of your 12AX7 tubes. That can make a big difference in these types of amps. Don't let any dopes at a Guitar Center or Sam arse hustle you into purchasing what THEY say is a MPI. Pretty much any 12AX7 that has been measured to qualify as a MPI....will say so...either on the box, and/or the tube itself. It will cost you a few bucks more, but worth it.

Thanks for the reply! I can't wait to get the amp. I saw a demonstration of the Cut control online, and it seems quite powerfull.
The amp has the following tubes. 2- NOS Tesla EL84 power tubes 1- NOS Tungsram 12AX7 (balanced) phase inverter 2- NOS Tesla ECC83 preamp tubes 1- NOS JAN Philips/Sylvania 5AR4
I admit to not understanding the difference betwee the different tubes....I have been a Pod / Zoom guy for years.
What do you think of this combination?
Thanks again.

Billyt....
Is it a Z-best cabinet, or another type of cabinet? If it's a Z-best....you got a REAL deal.
I'd still get another set of matched EL84 tubes. (as backup at a minimum) You WILL burn through tubes with this amp. It's the nature of the beast, so have spares. Also, start looking at a overdrive pedal. The Maz Jr. is overall a pretty clean amp. The POD is nice, but I'd suggest something with true-bypass switching. (Completely removes the effect from the signal chain when switched off....so no signal loss) I use a Fulldrive II and I think it's great with the Maz jr.

Very, very good deal. I guess there are good deals on Ebay. Usually I see the stuff that's going for more than it would anywhere else.

I paid almost that just for the head. Best deal I've seen on the bay in a while. Enjoy!

Billy,
I did notice there were quite a few noticeable dings and tears in the tolex in a few places in the pics... but the seller was very up front about that..
and this might have scared some folks away from it and helped you get a better deal... and you got a GREAT deal...
If I had gotten it I'd be totally fine with it in the condition AS IS and just play the FOOL outta that amp... just call it a little RELIC 'd !! ;D ;D
looks like you got some good NOS tubes with it... hang onto that NOS JAN PHILLIPS/ SYLVANIA 5AR4... thats your rectifier tube and thats a GOOD one... I have a similar NOS Mullard in my MAZ SR and it is SWEET!!
only thing I'd really do is get a couple of new Groove tube MATCHED el-84 power tubes rated @ 6 just as spares and maybe a couple of spare GT or NOS preamp tubes as spares and/or to change the sound a little...
and for help you've come to the right place... I'd go ahead and talk to Myles (@ Groove tubes for newer tubes) or Mike (@ KCA for NOS tubes) over in the EXPERTS section of this forum and they can hook you up with info on tubes... you can really TWEAK that amp to what you want it to be just by changing different tubes...
also alot of threads already about alot of the questions you will probably have... so you can go back through the forum and probably get alot of questions answered just looking at older threads...

Most used Z stuff is in great shape. I'd say this guy wasn't too sharp or he'd have had covers made (love my Studio Slip Clamshells!).
