Hey Z Gang!
Please help a brother out here! I currently own a Maz 38 NR which I obviously love. I've come across the opportunity to possibly buy a brand new 2x10 EZG 50 combo. Only problem is, I won't be able to try it out as the distance to the shop if too far. Before I take the plunge I was hoping to get some insights into the differences and similarities between the two amplifiers.
For those that have played or own(ed) both amps, in your own words (and without throwing general terms like "one is more voxy, one is more fendery"), how would you describe the sound of each amp? How do they differ, how are they similar? How do the treble and bass response differ between the amp? What's the headroom like? How do they feel under the fingers? Is the EZG as "stiff" as the MAZ, or a bit more "bouncy"?
Thanks!

Hi, haven’t owned either one but would say if you have the chance to get that amp new, I’d be all over it. It’s a model I regret never owning, along with the CAZ 45. Additionally, I’ve not heard of a 2x10 combo version, which is particularly interesting. Keep us apprised of your decision.

I own 2 Maz 38NR MKII heads and an EZG 50 head that was sent back to Don for every upgrade possible, including some no other EZG's have. I will say that both amps are incredible and they are night and day different. I'm thankful I don't have to choose, but if I did, the Maz 38NR MKII would absolutely be my choice. Opinions are subjective of course and I'm just offering mine. You can't go wrong either way.

I'll try, but the Vox/fender thing is really pretty accurate.
To me, the MAZ has more "color", or kind of harmonic complexity inherent to its sound. Straight up clean, the EZG generally can stay real clean a lot louder. Like with humbuckers, you can hit the guitar harder and stay clean on the EZG.
Since you know the maz, maybe compare the EZG to what you know about other fenders. Like in general, where the fenders make a really nice clean sound, they (to me) can get "ice-picky" really fast and you are sort of trying to balance dealing with the ice pick vs. it sounds like mud. The EZG has much softer and forgiving high end to me. On the low end, the EZG has a lot of low end available if you want, but it's softer like the high end. Maybe the EZG is a little more pedal friendly because it's a little more neutral in general.
If you really crank the EZG, it can very much get into that SRV thing, but know it is loud as all get out at that point.
Reverb - the reverb in the EZG is stellar.
From my angle, I have a 67 bassman, a 10 year old (?) deluxe reverb reissue, a 140 (80's harndwired, last ed johns design), and a 91(?) blues deville. I basically wanted a good fender sound and why I picked up the EZG. Do I play it all the time? No, but whenever I do plug it in, I'm delighted by the sound it produces. The other fenders, I don't bother with alt all.
Lastly, the 2x10 probably is a good thing in that the EZG has a ton of low end available and what you might be missing from the smaller speakers might work to be an asset. Fell wise, I don't think they are that different. Like if you play poorly, it will show that (like the MAZ), but if you can play with control, it will be super rewarding. Hope that helps a little.

Like Tom says, if I had to choose, then it would be the maz, I kind of go with that in that the maz is sort of just more fun.

The Maz will be a lot more versatile than the EZG but the EZG just happens to have the sounds I want, especially with the MKII mods. I would summarize the differences in character as simply 6L6 vs EL-84. As others have said, they are quite different amps. I play my EZG head through a 2x10 cab regularly and it is a good match.
