Can 6L6's be run in a Nova with a rebias ? Can KT66's run in a Nova ? I know the KT's draw a more current for the heater. Are current 5881's great tubes ? Who is making the best ones ?
thanks, JJ

Check with mailto:repairs@drzamps.com They will have the answers you require. Nova seems good with the 5881’s in it. ME

Well that's not so. 6L6's are a drop in replacement for the 5881's electronically, but not sonically if that matters to you at all . Of course with all output tube swaps the bias must be checked and adjusted if needed. 6L6's are bit cleaner, a touch higher wattage, but have a distinctive upper end bit ( think Twin Reverb ) that is not pleasant to me. I'll leave it at that. KT66's will not fit comfortably in the Nova chassis. As I'm sure you are aware KT 66's by spec demand 3 1/2 inch tube center spacing for proper operation and long life, ala Route 66. KT 66's will be touching in the Nova chassis, not good. I would leave well enough alone as the Tung Sol 5881's sound fantastic in the Nova Tubeswappinjohn. Z

I used to try and second guess Dr Z when it came to tubes and speakers and in almost every instance I would go back to stock and I would find that the amp sounded best the way it came from the factory. YMMV Todd

Thanks for the info Doc. I was asking because I have some old American ones (6l6) and I like KT66's. While I have your attention. I use 5R4's in my Tweed clones. 1) 5E3 Tweed Deluxe 2) '62 Brown Deluxe 3) Late 50's Tweed Pro with KT66's 4) Tweed Double Deluxe 5) Low Power Tweed Twin with KT66's 6) Single ended head that can run many different tubes with many cabinets My favorite ones to drag out of the house are the LP Twin and the Brown Deluxe. I'm looking at your amps that might be in that vein. The Nova and Z28 MK II come to mind. Maybe a Legacy amp ? I like cathode bias.5R4's seem to get me some sag.
thanks, JamminJohn

Thanks for looking. I'm trying to sell my Double Deluxe so I can get a used Z. No luck so far. I'm interested in the Z28 MK II and the Nova but may have to get something else. There are no Z dealers near me and the only dealer in the state doesn't carry many Z's. They only have one right now.
