Bought it used a few months back. Don seemed to think it was a very early model. Factory FX loop. 3x 12ax7 preamp tubes 4x EL84 power section.
When it gets warmed up, sounds like one of those jet heaters they use at construction sites. I pulled all the tubes and put them all back until I got to the preamp section. Seems like v1 and v2 are the problem. I'm going to clean the sockets and order a new set of tubes. I was thinking about looking for a High gain set to give me a little more push at a reasonable volume. Not sure though. Any suggestions?

I would go with quality tubes and don’t think too much about gain. You’re less likely to get issues like microphonics with a better quality tube. The gain differences in 12AX7s aren’t as much as we think. You can hear sonic differences though like brightness and even brittleness with different manufacturers. I’ve had very good luck with JJ 12AX7 (ECC 83S) from Eurotubes out of Portland OR. They do a lot of testing on the tubes before sale and their customer service is excellent. They have three different 12AX7s, the ECC 83S, 803S and 83MG, the 803 is a long plate and should only be used in heads. I use the MG in two different amps I built and the 83s in my Ghia and Z-Plus. Differences are subtle. I’ve also tried NOS 12AX7 and they can be good, but again the difference is subtle.

I've installed a PPIMV to both of my original Prescriptions. They work really well in those amps. If you don't know how to install one, you should definitely consider sending it back to Don for the mod. You'll get all the gain you want at reasonable volumes, or you could just throw good dirt pedals in front of it. Those are really great amps, enjoy it!

All I know is that a properly-set-up original Rx amp is one if the absolute most rippingly-awesome amplifier sounds I've ever heard. No joke.
I found one several years ago, but got rid of it because I couldn't contain how truly deafeningly loud it was. [Nowadays I'd like to think that with more options beyond just the AirBrake (e.g., the Fryette Power Station) I think I could maybe make it work.] The guy I sold my Rx to on TGP claimed that it had all sorts of issues/noise, etc... and this was just after Doc & Don had given it a full checkup. (Jeez, dude!) So I dunno... maybe they can be temperamental or unstable amps, but lordy do they sound amazing (and LOUD!) when they're all tuned up.
