Looking for your advice, Therapy owners. Are you folks all happy with the Therapy long-term? I’m not an amp flipper, and I’m looking to add a Dr.z to my small collection. Once I buy it, I’ll likely never sell.
I’d like an amp that can get into higher gain territory, at reasonable volume. I missed a local deal on an EMS. Since then, I’m thinking about a new Nova, or a used Therapy (still open to an EMS, but they seem relatively rare). There’s a Therapy that’s about half the cost of a new Nova within a couple hour drive…but it’s been sitting for sale for 6 months - why? I’m also questioning how good this amp is because the current owner only had it for a couple months before selling (although he’s cycled through a lot of gear in that time…so I think it’s just part of his approach to gear)
Anyway, are you all happy with it, and if looking for higher gain at reasonable volume, is the Therapy a good option?
Thanks all! W

I would not consider the Therapy a higher gain amp, even with the master volume. It can get pretty growly in an overdriven tweed kind of way. Maybe it's just my definition of overdrive vs gain though. I've never played a Nova. Good luck.

I've had my Therapy and Nova for a few years. Neither is high gain, but both are amazing. They are 2 very different amps. If you can't actually play them side by side, there are good YouTube videos that accurately represent both. I personally couldn't pick a favorite between the 2.

The Therapy is a great amp. but if your looking for high gain out of it, it’s not gonna happen.

I haven't played the Nova, but have seen comparison videos and have owned a Therapy since mid-2018. The Therapy is my most often used amp and I don't believe I'll ever sell it. Several other amps have come and gone since purchasing the Therapy.

I have both amps too. Love them both but I have said on the forum before that the Therapy would be my dessert island amp. They sound really great and is true of any Dr Z amp, they have a great clean tone and overdrive wonderfully! I know people have said they aren't really high gain amps but I use Humbuckers in most of my guitars and I don't ever feel cheated on the gain side of things. They might not do it with single coils but with humbuckers . . . .yum! Of course, it you want to go higher gain any assortment of pedals will push you beyond what the amps will do. My 2 cents, Todd

Given that everyone's concept of gain vs clean is different ... a Nova might work for you, or maybe consider a Monza with master volume - if you can find a used one? Happy hunting & good luck!
