Hello everyone it has been a while since I posting or been on the forum. As the title says I am looking to get a new amp and was looking help. Right now I have it down to z wreck/jr, z28 mk ii, plus, and maybe the maz. I had the wreck jr before but had to part ways with it bc I had a new born and needed to be quiet and sadly got a quad cortex. I have a 4 year old a 1 and a half year old and now just found out we are having another one. This time I want to keep a real amp and use a ox box for home playing so I was thinking about just getting the head version of the amps. I quite enjoyed the wreck jr but also curious about the other amps. I play classic rock and Americana for most of my playing. Any input helps shape my decision bc I live south of indy and sweetwater is a pretty far drive. Thanks everyone!

I have owned 13 different Zs over the years. Recommend Z-Plus with a creamback. Most versatile combo.

+1 on the Z-Plus. I don’t have and never played a Wreck Jr., so I’m no help in comparison. But I might also take a look at a Ghia anniversary. It’s such a pure & real amp.

The Maz is the most flexiible, but but but I think the Z28MKII is fantastic. It takes pedals very well, great cleans if you turn the volume down and master up, great edge of breakup to dirty perfect for laying a boost or overdrive on top of. If you put it into an american speaker it will do one thing, if you put it into an English speaker it does another.
My second choice would be the Maz, they haven’t sold thousands of them for nothing.

I own both. Plus has classic Maz front end (V, Tr, Mid, Bass, Master and Cut. Half and full power and Reverb You can cover full spectrum of Blackface tones from clean to warm, especially with a Creamback. Baby Wreck has V, Tr, Bass, Cut, and Master. It is a darker sounding amp with the Greenback. Very sensitive to guitar volume and pick attack. Beefy Voxy tone. I play teles and strats and love them both which is why play both of them in different situations. Have to pick only one? I might do with the Plus.

Pedal player or amp breakup? What tone are you shooting for?

Pedal player or amp breakup? What tone are you shooting for? I like amp break up but would love the option for the amp to take pedals as well.

I have really wanted a classic rock sound James gang. Early ZZ Top, Lynyrd skynyrd, etc. edge of break up grit. My guitar is a r9 les Paul. Simple is better. Thank you

Lots of good amp advice above. I'll chime in that I think you'll love the Ox. If you're going to do headphones, you can really get a great feel. To me, the room mics are the secret weapon that really opens it all up. If you're looking to play through a speaker quietly, the attenuation setting let you really get it quiet. And, yes, your house & spouse will be happy that you're not blasting away. I'm mostly headphones, and it's very cool just to have my Ghia rocking wide open. Good Luck and congrats on baby #3!

Early ZZ Top, Lynyrd skynyrd, etc. edge of break up grit. My guitar is a r9 les Paul. Simple is better. Thank you "When Joe Walsh approached Dr. Z for a new amp to use on the latest Eagles’ tour, he harkened back to the legendary recordings with the James Gang, where Joe was using small, single ended Tweed combos. Never one to be satisfied with rehashing old designs, Dr. Z and Joe Walsh upped the ante by looking to hi-fi audio amplifiers; from this the Z-PLUS was born." Just sayin'.

Early ZZ Top, Lynyrd skynyrd, etc. edge of break up grit. My guitar is a r9 les Paul. Simple is better. Thank you First things first. For what you're looking for, any Dr Z I've ever played would do the trick. You can't pick a bad one. I can make a couple suggestions to elaborate on the great ones already made above. Z Plus As said above, it was developed by Dr and Joe to get a cranked tweed champ sound with higher headroom if I remember correctly. It has great sparkling cleans with a reall articulate top end, especially with the on board reverb. It grinds out some overdrive as well. I would say it never really gets into cranked Marshall territory though. It's a beautiful sounding, full featured amp. Maybe closer to the Fender camp but does it's own thing. The low end is tight but not deep and full enough to rattle your teeth (if you're in to that). Maz 18 Full featured amp like the Z Plus. Maybe gets the nod with a little more versatility. Can definitely creep into that cranked Marshall territory but still does sparkling cleans. Fuller low end as well from my experience with the rooms and speakers I've played. Maybe a little more British but can pull off a Fender clean. Z28mkII If you want full frequency, super simple, powerful, eats pedals for breakfast, Z28mkII is the wild card. Beautiful high end, strong mids that sit pretty neutral, and enough low end grunt to make the picks vitrate off the table. All with controllable volume. Can clean up nice, can drive nice. Doesn't really sound like anything else. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the Z Plus or Maz, but that's part of it's charm. Summary (just my opinion for what I hear and how i use the amps) Z Plus = Fender Clean to a little grind, beautiful top end Max 18 = More versatility, British dirt that can clean up nice, full frequency Z28mkII = HUGE frequency range, work horse but not a one trick pony, super simple, does its own thing I say three kids, three amps, get um all!!!

Well it looks like I’m going to have to hold off on one of these amps. I snagged a z therapy for a great price! Too good to pass up.
