I know this is often touted as a "you don't need overdrive pedals" amp, and it certainly can do that. But I had set up a simple board with a Tim (v3) and a Nordland ODR-CS for dirty / boosty sounds through a tweed deluxe (clone). I wanted a little more girth and solid low end, so I thought let me try the Nova since it's tweed voiced. Got it sounding great with the pedals and put a Strymon Flint in the loop. It occurred to me to kick on the OD side. I kept it pretty low since there already was some lift coming from the dirt boxes. Voila, a perfect solo boost at the end of the input chain. Yes, of course, it can perform this function without any pedals, but I found it easier to produce higher gain sounds and retain a balance between clean rhythm, dirty rhythm and lead volume levels using this approach. I've also been able to play it a pretty decent volume, the level where the amp comes to life. I love this amp

That's pretty much how I've always run mine "cleans" are breaking up a little with OD and Fuzz pedals at about unity volume, then i can get a bit cleaner w guit vol or use it to boost for solos I've never really used the amp's OD channel except to try it out. Gonna have to try it again using it as a boost, as I may need it in this new band sitch. But i really just love the normal channel!!! At home i mostly just plug straight in. All things considered, the Nova is probably my all time favorite amp. 36lbs of grab n go with juice to spare and sick AF tone. Whooot!!!!

My OD knob is set below 9 (o'clock) with volume about noon, fwiw. This setting gives me the option of running with OD always on and backing off guitar volume. So it's kind of a two-trick pony

So it's kind of a two-trick pony yea, I just don't like the sound of the OD channel with my guitars or for my style, and I don't need any more drive then I get with the normal channel. I just tried it again, nope. Seems like lots of folks like it though so certainly nothing wrong with using it that way.
