Hey all. I'm new to the forums, actually pretty new to Dr Z and Boutique amps in general. I just picked up a used Stingray, I had a few questions about it and I figured 'where better to take those questions than here?'
First off I just gotta say the amp is everything I was looking for and more. I was in the market for a clean chimey Voxy sounding amp and man does this thing deliver in that department!
It's a 2×12 combo with a Celestion Blue and Gold and it just sounds stellar. I keep reading that it's a clean machine not made to break up too much or really be driven but I think those people were just scared off by the volume on the high input (this thing has some awesome natural break up, admittedly it might benefit from the half power mod or an attenuator further down the line but we'll see). It's got a cream tolex finish with brown grill and deep blue panel so it looks as hot as it sounds. And no that was not a typo in the title; I picked up an older "Stingray" (s/n is only 0014).
So onto my questions, (and I apologize if they are total noob questions but I am a total noob here lol so bear with me):
I was wondering about dating the amp? I mean from what I gather online and the S/N literally saying it's the 14th one made I think that means it was made in 2006 but I'm not sure rly
And going in, ngl I assumed the dream speaker set up for a Voxy sounding amp would be a pair of blues in a combo. The amp sounds amazing as is and I don't really have any interest in changing the speakers but I'm curious about the pairing. From my research, Golds are essentially Celestion's attempt at remaking the blues but for a higher power rating... so did the last owner blow a blue and replace one with a gold? Like is that something I need to be worried about with the remaining blue with the Stingray's power (keeping in mind I like to push the amp and drive it at high volumes)? Or is there a subtle sonic difference between the two and the pairing just brings out the best of both speakers?
And last question, a lot of people asking which ODs work with the Sting/Stangray (my TS and Morning Glory sound pretty great so no complaints there) but I'm more curious if anyone here has a favourite boost pedal they pair with their amp? Just been into boosts lately and been shopping around for one so I'm curious.
