Hey all! New Z owner, found a stupid good deal on a dream Z wreck local on a complete fluke. Since purchasing I’ve been having some odd vibrations that have turned into crackling seemingly frequency dependent. I found a set of NOS 6n14n’s on reverb which should be here end of week. Was considering replacing the rest just for good measure, was curious if anyone had experience with the long plate ecc803s, or anything else besides the standard 12ax7 in v1? Wouldn’t mind a bit of extra headroom if I could find it. Cheers

They are nice sounding tubes, but really should be used in heads only because the long plate is susceptible to vibration and would be near the speaker in a combo. If your Z Wreck is a combo, I recommend JJ ECC83MG. They are a slightly lower gain version of the ECC83 and are really smooth sounding. Eurotubes out of Oregon carries them. www.eurotubes.com/store/pc/preamp%20tube%20descriptions.htm

You really can't go wrong with the current tube list that Dr Z spec's on the website. You may get a little more mileage out of a NOS Mullard or Bugle Boy 12AX7 in V1 but the current production Tung Sol's are just fine. It is a great amp. The magic tho are the Russian 6N14N's in the output section. You are already there with those.
Here is the current tube compliment for the Z Wreck. V1-3: Tung Sol 12AX7, V4-7: NOS 6N14N (EL84 – matched quad), V8: Sovtek 5AR4

^^What Bryan said^^ I made the mistake of swapping out preamp tubes on my Maz18 once, though it was fine. I was thinking I would make improvements. I didn’t. I have since come to the conclusion Doc has sorted things out very thoroughly. If you must roll through preamp tubes, remember what tube came out of which socket. When it comes to preamp tubes, I’ve adopted the motto, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I run the stock tubes in my QS Wreck. Just replaced the 6n14n's with a fresh set. I could see swapping V1 with something else just because its easy, especially if you own some NOS already, but I have not really found any reason personally. The amp is amazing as is.
As far as extra headroom.. What type of Guitar/Pickup do you use? I find the amp darn loud and clean with single coils.
