I posted this on a maz thread about boost pedals and saw it came up with some captcha thing and nobody viewed it, so trying again here. 🤨
This is a quick demo of using a Keeley compressor (gc-2) into an EMS, but it does the exact same thing into a MAZ18 when the maz is set to a similar crunchy sound (crunchy digging in, pretty clean when playing light). Doesn't work for all amps, but interesting with these amps. The compressor is basically set off and and I'm just boosting the input of the amp. Basically more amp distortion and boost the volume a bit too. Kind of old school I guess, but it's simple and it works. Works really well with a strat too, just the amp is a little cleaner overall there.

I get the same effect with the Bad Bob Boost from Analog Man. No sound coloration. It just drives the amp a little harder and it sounds thicker. I do want to try this Keeley compressor though.

I don't know if it would really be any different as a boost. I do like that I can add a little compression to it if I want, which can help a lot when the cab isn't running and I get no sustain from that. But in general, yes, just more amp like you say. You see Tim Pierce using that mxr micro amp all the time over the years and I think that's basically the same concept too. The older you get, the simpler the better.
