Hi all, I recently acquired two Ibanez AS50 guitars from 1981. Absolutely monstrous guitars. I gig in a country band with my Stang Ray which is equally monstrous.
I could use some help: when playing the AS50s, the humbuckers sound very mid focused as opposed to a strat or tele. I turn the cut control up to get some highs, and turn the tone control up, but then it becomes way too bassy with the volume at noon (we play very loud due to the age of my band mates and their refusal to mic the instruments).
What are your humbucker settings and what does the tone control do exactly?
Thanks for your time.

The EQ of your pickups is the culprit. If single coils give you the EQ you need for the music you are playing, why not use them? Otherwise, get an EQ pedal and dial the mids out. As you have discovered, the Ray’s tone control is somewhat “limited” - in the sense there is only one knob. Try an EQ pedal if you insist on using the HB guitar. Also, I have heard that some country music has been played on a Telecaster - just sayin’!

Do you play humbuckers through yours? If so, how do you set the tone?

I've had 2 stangrays. I never used humbuckers with it. And from what I know, there are not that many forum members who used humbuckers with the stangray. It was pretty much exclusively used with single coils.
Sorry I wish I could help you answer your question.

Not a Ray owner, nor do I have the guitar you’re using, but the pickup in them is likely mid-focused, high gain units. Many believe the low gain, PAF style humbucking pickup has a clearer, more open sound. Some are even compared to single coil pickups in sound. The higher gain pickups don’t clean up as well when you turn down the volume control on your guitar. They often become muddy due to the way the inductance of the pickup reacts with the guitar controls. Doing a ‘50’s’ style control wiring might make things a little better, but not as much as a pickup swap. Not something I’d recommend as the guitar was made for a particular sound and may not be best for what you’re trying to do. ME

I've only known one long term Ray player and I'm pretty sure I only ever saw him using SC's. I had a Ray for a couple of years and I can't honestly remember what guitars I played through it at home but it was always SC's when I played out. Best non Fender-voiced cleans I ever had. +1 on the EQ pedal idea.

Got those from an old stangray demo video. So maybe it will help
