I once had a Blockhead '63 split-front JTM45 clone that I foolishly sold. I'm looking for another amp that can cover the same ground. I was leaning towards the Route 66, but am open to other suggestions.

Alrighty, I guess I better start looking for an Antidote. How does the Route 66 compare to the Antidote?

Alrighty, I guess I better start looking for an Antidote. How does the Route 66 compare to the Antidote? I’m sure others can shed additional opinions, but in short they are two different beasts though they share the same power tubes. I traded my RT66 for the Antidote. EF86 and the tone stack of the 66 is different from the Antidote. I would say in brief the 66 is more mid focused, while the Antidote offers nice chime. They both have fabulous clarity and depth to their sound In a way it’s like comparing a Ghia vs a Maz18. They both use same power tubes but sound very different. They’re both loud, but sound great at low volume. Loved them both, but I’m saving my ears for old age, that’s why I no longer have either.

how about we make a current production recommendation. I just purchased a Maz 18 NR. I tell you, there is some great Marshally tones in that amp. Much higher gain than the Reverb version. You can get great crispy overdrive all the way up to full onslaught drive. I think you should consider it in your search and you can buy one right now from several online vendors. my 2 cents, Todd

I was leaning towards the Route 66, but am open to other suggestions. The only new amp I've ever owned that came close to the JTM 45/Bassman sound l was the Antidote: My Route 66 was kinda close, but the Antidote did it better, and is an excellent amp even at lower volumes. Stupidly, I sold the "Dote" to fund another purchase. Fortunately, that purchase was a Z-Lux....

I feel like an idiot here, but want to try and help anyway.
I've never played a jtm45 except a blues breaker reissue combo that I thought sounded pretty bad (boxy, gnarly, just sort of unpleasant). I have an Antidote, and that sounds great, but I don't know if that's exactly what I think of when I think jtm45 (that's probably where I insert that I'm an idiot comment). I think the jtm45 was basically and old bassman, and I have an old blackface bassman (really spikey) and a fender blues deville (nice fender type sound, but not what I think of with jtm45) which was supposed to be based on a tweed bassman, but I don't hear "what I think" is jtm45 in those amps either. The EMS with that JTM50 side, that sounds great maybe is a good bet. That brings me to the someday to be released X-ray which I think from a sound standpoint in my mind's eye get's tones like I think a jtm45 is supposed to do.
The Antidote, when set really loud, get's what "I think" is a really close Malcom (ac/dc) tone. But it's REALY loud.
The X-ray, I think gets a great what I think of jtm45 sound where it has a lot of girth, but clarity and nuance, and nothing ice picky about it at all.
Having said all that, all those amps are discontinued except the x-ray which isn't out yet. If today I was looking for old school Marshall and could pick between any 1 of those (and a remedy that I have), I'd pick the X-Ray. It's not going to have the flexibility of say the 800 side of the EMS, but it has something else going on. The odd thing here is I don't think as an amp design itself that it has anything in common with a jtm45. And if I want to back that off a hair and I could have only one amp, I'd be more than happy with any of those amps if I couldn't choose. They are all fantastic amps.

Between the Z-Best or the 4x10 Backline cab, which goes best with the Antidote?
