Hey fellas - Not too long ago I purchased a used NOVA combo. It sounds fantastic! When I got it, I was so pleased with the tones that I was getting out of it and I just absolutely loved the amp. I liked it so much that I was experimenting and put in every effect I had either in the Loop or out in front of the amp. The end result was that I probably plugged in and unplugged the Send and Return jack's at least 50 times. So I go to turn on my amp today, and I have absolutely no sound. Hey, so that's only partially true. I can make noise come out of the speaker by plugging a cable into the return Jack of the Loop and tapping on the end of it. That is the only way I can get any sound out of the amplifier at all. In all other configurations (me plugging into the front of the amp, me loading up both ends of the effects loop, etc.…) I have no sound coming out of the amp whatsoever. I also tried plugging in an external cab - no dice, same result. I am pretty well convinced it's because I was dicking around so much with the effects loop, but I don't know what I did or what could possibly be the issue.
Any insight anyone could give to me would be greatly greatly appreciated. I want to get this fantastic amp up and running again, because I already miss the amazing tone. Help me Z talk, you're my only hope!

Hi Norrin Did you try taking a patch cable and jumpering across the Fx loop send and return ? Maybe one of the contacts is stuck open on the loop jacks.

Would it be worth it to unscrew the jacks and see if one of the contacts IS stuck open? Is that something that is easy to do?

I don't think I would unscrew the jack. I'm not an amp tech, but if it were me, first I would carefully remove the tubes just for safer handling, and remove the chassis screws and take the chassis out to check the Fx jacks.

Just re read the OP. So you can tap on a cable plugged into Fx Return and get noise. Can you get the popping and static noise by tapping on a cable plugged into the front end of the amp ? If not, that would seem to indicate something amiss BEFORE the Fx loop. Check the input jack too.

It's possible that V1 or V2 has failed. They're both before the FX loop.

OK. So I moved the amp over to the workbench. I didn’t change anything. I just plugged it in and turned it on and plugged in a guitar. All of a sudden it appears to be working. I figure, this can’t be right. This intermittent stuff just doesn’t make sense in a properly functioning amplifier. So I switch back-and-forth between the channels a few times. I plug a pedal into the loop. Then, one time upon switching to the overdrive channel I start getting a whole bunch of crackling. Oh, that noise I know what that is! That’s preamp tubes! So I tested some tubes in the effects loop and that doesn’t seem to make a difference. So I swapped out both of the preamp tubes and sure enough, that fixes the issue. Everything seems to be working fine. Tubes.
