Hello, brand new here from just down the road from Z HQ in beautiful Akron. I've caught the Z bug, and am looking for a 1x12, lower wattage combo. The Carmen Ghia looks best to me, although I'd likely want to add a MV at some point. Also looking at the Monza, and Maz 18, with or without reverb. Guitars are a PRS CE22, Fender Telecaster w/ humbucker in the neck pos, and a 70s RI Gibson LP Deluxe. I also have 2 higher wattage heads, a 90s RI Orange OR80, and a 100w TopHat Ambassador. How would the CG be for Gilmourish/ Alex Lifeson type tones? I have an Alexander Jubilee pedal that easily gives me more gain than I really use anymore, to get me into 80s hard rock/early 90s 'grunge' territory. I would like some nice cleans, and I don't need them at blistering volumes (believe you me, the TopHat already gives me those ), as I am primarily a home player these days who occasionally jams/ messes around with song ideas with a 2nd guitarist friend. What say ye??

What say ye?? I would look closely at the Maz 18 MarkII, the CG certainly fits the bill as you mention.

I have a maz 18 mk2. IT IS THE GATEWAY DRUG! Lol. Next thing you know, you’ll have 4 or 5 of these amps and still find yourself wanting more haha. I want a ghia too. And a wreck. And a kt45. And a……..
Welcome to the club!

I believe there are rumors of a MV equipped Ghia coming soon.

The Nova is a possibility. Lots of great tone and versatility. There will be plenty of clean headroom at lower volume and enough volume to play out. I think there are many Z’s that fit what you want. The amps with master volume and/or the level control are so adjustable for tone and volume that you could choose any one and be happy. My suggestion is based on the core tone, as I hear it, for the people you say you want to sound like. You’ll probably be using a pedal or two to achieve the sound you are aiming for with whichever amp you choose. The Nova is a great starting point. ME

Welcome! Take a look at the Cure. It has the excellent Level control.

If you want to control your over all volume there are better options than the Ghia for you. I love the Ghia, but the Maz with the master is my favorite of all time. I had both at the same time and I'm not saying the Carmen Ghia is a one trick pony, because it's not, but in practical use because of the volume there was a small range of tones that I could use with it. With the Maz I could dial in all sorts of tones, including a convincing Ghia tone (at least for what I normally dialed it in).
I prefer the Maz, but The Cure, Jetta, and any other designs with the master volume are going to be much more usable for you with a variety of tones. They all take pedals well.

Thanks for the replies thus far. I'm often hesistant to post examples like this because with a guy like DG in particular, who knows what all effects, and studio tricks he had @ his disposal that I don't, plus I of course don't have his brain, or fingers. But this is just for a rough idea of a 'basic', cleanish, solo tone I would be looking for. Not 'nail', as I'm not forming a PF cover band by any means, but...something that would get me into the ballpark. Particularly from 3:39 onwards to the end of the piece-

Great tone! I'd point you to a Cure or Maz18mkII. Both will get you close and both have very controllable volume levels. Theres also the z plus and new Z28mkII. However, first choice would be be cure and maz. Good luck!

Particularly from 3:39 onwards to the end of the piece- I think that's just the sound of a DI guitar. Really compressed (no dynamics), and even with that, not really any sustain.

What about the CG with a MV added?

YES!!! Ghia with a mv mod....perfect. I'd have to go with a 1x12 myself, but yes...the more research I do, the better ticket the Ghia is looking!
