Hi all,
First time poster here. I’ve been playing for a couple of years, mainly using a Boss Katana 50, or Waza Air headphones. But I’m wanting to get an actual tube amp so I can stop relying on a laptop or phone to adjust by tone.
Anyway, I’m enamored by Alex Lifeson’s guitar tone on the first few Rush albums. If always read it was a 50 watt Marshall. But this video made me wonder otherwise:
I’m loving the tone starting at about 6 minutes in with a 335, a few pedals and a Z-Lux.
So since you all are the gurus of Dr. Z amps, would you recommend a Z-Lux for my target tones or something else? (EMS?)
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum, there is a lot of experience and good people here. I have both the Z-Lux and the EMS. They're both great amps, and the Z-Lux is really nice with the built in reverb and tremolo. It also has a terrific Master Volume that maintains the amp's drive and sustain when you turn it down. You might also consider the Maz 18 NR, it is a really versatile tone monster that can go from Marshally to Voxy tones with ease. It's Doc's most popular amp for a reason. The EMS is a great amp, and can go from early first generation Marshall tone to hot rodded JCM-800 sounds.
I guess it boils down to your needs as a player. If you need an amp to get really clean and would use tremolo and reverb, go with the Z-Lux. It does get pretty gainy as you can hear in the demo. If you're a rock and roller and play in a loud band the EMS would be my pick. And the Maz 18 has a big variety of great tones. It's kind of a swiss army knife amp but it does all those tones very, very well.
You should go to the Z amp website and check out the videos for his amps, they are well done. And here on our forum our friend Adam does terrific demo videos. I bought my first Z amp back around 2014 and I haven't looked back. I'm blessed with a bunch of them now and they all bring something great to the table. Hope this helps, and again...welcome.

I don't have, and haven't heard a Z-lux, but that demo vid doesn't really hit the rush box for me. I think it works because the amp in general just sounds great and the player can make it work. Like the amp is a little more in the Fender than Marshall camp. I do have a CAZ and EMS though. Either of those I think would get you closer. The more saturated stuff (finding my way, working man), CAZ. Some of the other stuff that rolls of cleaner, the EMS, and maybe some simple boost pedal with that one to get to the more saturated stuff. But straight up, no pedals, CAZ. I played in a pretty popular rush tribute for about 5 years, so hopefully I learned something. If I were to do it today, I'd probably need to do 4 shows on one amp and 4 the other the amp to figure out which sort of worked better for me, but both will get you there. CAZ will get you there at a lower volume and basically no pedals. Hope it helps a little.
