Proud and extremely happy owner of a brand new Z-Lux head as of yesterday and a new member here. Not the first Z amp I’ve played through, but the first Dr Z amp I’ve owned, worth every penny I saved and every moment I waited.
With my day job, I’ve only had a few hours to play but I’ve been floored by the incredible quality overall in several ways (really solid build quality, immaculate fit and finish as examples) and the range of the “American amp” tones that live within this amp are outstanding from shimmering Blackface type cleans to a raw and thick Tweed-amp style roar and all points in between.
The reverb, tremolo and the master volume are all amazing. Just in the house so far so no big volumes but what a wonderful “string to speaker” experience and feel.
I’ve been using a Warmoth Strat with Van Zandt Rock model (hot vintage) single coils and a Reverend Club King 290 with a TV Jones Classic Plus in the bridge, over the weekend I plan to get the other handful of guitars out (including my favourite guitar) and savour the tones of the Z-Lux.
I’m running the Z-Lux through a Zilla custom 1x15 speaker cabinet with a WGS G15A inside,m. In future, I would like to add a Dr Z 2x12 with at least one Z12 fitted to experience the amp with the speaker the Doctor intended for the combo version.
Last night I plugged straight in and with the combination of the boost pedal and master volume, thought I could easily gig this amp with no pedals and just work the guitar’s volume pot depending on the genre but I got out my small Pedaltrain Metro 16 tonight with my gigging staples on it (Fulltone ‘69mkii fuzz, pre-mosfet Fulldrive2, OCD Ge, Catalinbread Belle Epoch and Walrus Julia v2) and was again extremely happy.
In particular, the Z-Lux’s response to the ‘69 had been something I was curious about before I got the Z-Lux as I do like to run either this or one of three other fuzzes and fuzzes can be finicky about amps (eg phenomenal with cranked Marshalls but anaemic with BF Fenders). The results were insanely good, allowing the ‘69mkii to sound easily as harmonically rich and fat as it does into a cranked Marshall.
For my preferences and needs as a player, this is the stuff my dreams have been made of, so, thank you Dr Z and co. for creating this phenomenal amp!
