This was a surprise, I dropped my daughter off at drum lessons and then got cornered at my local shop about an SG JR that was available. They knowing that I was a fan, recommended me to the owner and we struck a deal. 1963, single owner, solid 9 on a 10 scale, cleanest one I’ve had my hands on.

Nice! Been looking at a reissue on CL lately. My views on reissues changed after purchasing this one. A well worn vintage guitar has a feel to it, but a guitar that is as close to NOS as this one is, pretty damn close to the feel of a new custom shop reissue. What they don’t get right on the standard reissue is the color, the red is always too dark and the grain does not show through. A guitar is a guitar, some are great, some aren’t and that isn’t based on the year it was built. It’s all in if you will bond with it. SG’s are my go to, they are light, medium carve necks. The tele of the Gibson line IMHO, they have spank. I let a friend try my 64 out last week, he comment on how hot the pickup was, I was like “It’s not a hot pickup, the guitar is just that resonant”.

Agree, nothing like the real thing if you can find it. You scored big on this one, congrats!

The new one will not surpass my 64. Something special about that one, but the differences are minor. Turns out is a 64, nobody apparently can date those correctly. LOL

Welcome to the club! Here's my 64/65 and my 63. I’m keeping my eyes out for a used but not abuse 63/64 SG Special. Maybe I’ll be able to use this pretty clean 65 as trade bait. That Custom is killer!

My old amp tech had an early '60s SG Junior. It was like a giant spatula. It was one of the best sounding electric guitars I've played! I had an early 60s Epiphone Olympic that was similar. Very light, loud and resonant unplugged. Some folks say the wood doesn't matter in a solid body electric guitar. I don't think those people have played a '60s mahogany Gibson.
