Hello. Just recently I purchased a wreck jr and I am loving it so far. I am mostly a bedroom player becides doing some garage jams. The goal is to do some small gigs this next year. I mostly play rock, blues (Srv) and now country (paisley). I find that the wreck jr can get me there with all categories. This leads me to why I’m posting… is there a need for another z amp. I am very new to these amps and I have only played the wreck jr. I live south of indy so I can’t just walk into a store and play these awesome amps. I don’t need a loud amp haha the wreck jr is plenty loud. Thank you

Welcome to the Z club. I have the Z Wreck Jr combo. It's pretty special for sure. Does anyone really need several amps? Of corse not. I have owned some amazing amps over the last 40 years and the Wreck Jr is top 4 of all time with no real #1. I enjoyed the journey that actually started with a very early hardwood 2x10 Maz Jr way back when. My 2nd amp is a Swart AST pro, and it's very cool as well, but I only use it for band practice and back up at gigs. It's smaller lighter and has reverb. I much prefer the Jr though.
I could see selling the Swart for the new version of the Maz 18 though... Lots of side by side videos out there and they seem to not really cover the same sonic space. I'm someone that needs 5-6 amps, but if I had the resources I would!!!
If you ever make it up to Fort Wayne, message me and I'll meet you out at Sweetwater. They usually have a few in the showroom, and they would pull anything in stock from the warehouse.
Did you get the combo or head?

The amp gets better, IMHO, after some speaker break-in time. I mostly use mine as a cleanish amp for country stuff. Master wide open and volume 9-11 o'clock. I could do most of my bands show with the Flynt reverb/trem and a Timmy or similar drive/boost stomper. I'm sure others will chime in as well. Enjoy!

My friend would always say "you don't 'need' anything, but you do 'want' a lot of things." Do you need another amp, not really. But if you want something with a different flavor there is always the Z-Plus. It is about the same wattage and gives you a nice Fender vibe. There are so many Z amps and other amp choices out there.

Hi eralay44, welcome to the forum.
<< is there a need for another z amp >>
Without a doubt !
The Wreck Jr. is a great EL84 amp. Doc makes EL84's sound better than any other amp builder out there IMOH.
He also makes great amps using the 6V6, 6L6, or 5881 output tube. My suggestion would be to pick up a second Z amp utilizing one of these output tubes. It will be a whole different flavor of Z goodness. Cheers DC

I’m sold on the wreck jr. I need to do research and see what the next amp is going to be. They all sound great is the problem.

If you’re garagebanding… small gigs with minimal PA support (not mic’ingvamps)… small, medium, large might be your first sidetrack. I’ve found the z28 mkII… and it’s very scalable. Then you become incredibly aware that there are many flavors of the same goodness. I might grow tired of grape… and wander over to pineapple. That’s when it really gets addictive, and maybe a tad bit expensive. Best of luck!

I think I would like to check out a Zwreck jr….I have a Jetta head (my first Dr Z amp) and it is a great sounding amp!! I like the demos I’ve heard on the ZWreck amps..is the jr powerful enough for the stage? I play mostly in the bars or an occasional Festival in the summer…. Brett

I currently am out of a Stratocaster but was curious if you can get a Srv Lenny tone out of the z wreck? If anyone has tried please let me know. I have been pretty busy with work and haven’t gotten a chance to really mess with the clean side of the amp. Thanks
