Saw on the site, there is an update/mod. But I dont know what this mod does. Anyone have an idea? I just ordered the only EMS I could find new, should be here in a few days - and wanted to know if my amp will include that or not? Thanks in advance to anyone that can shed some light.

I don't think new amps leave the factory with the mods. Contact don at dr z repairs for info via the email address on the site. He can fill you in. Reference this thread ztalk.proboards.com/thread/88090/updatesIf you have any specific questions, fire away!

I had planned on playing this with my Fryette PowerStation, so that isnt a mod I need immediately. But it seems like a great option because as I understand, this thing needs some volume. I was trying to wait and see if I could find a used one out there, and I have been waiting for months for actually any to come available and finally saw one at Palen music. Had to give it a go.

it's a great amp, that's why you don't see any used for sale!

The circuit tweaks will be in there. The level control mod will not unless it was ordered that way by the dealer (it involves and upcharge). I believe we have only send one EMS out this way so far. If you have a power station, I wouldn't think this mod is necessary.

Thinking about sending mine in for the mods. What was changed on the circuit?

I’ve been slow walking the update. Mainly because I’m pretty happy with everything right now. I tell myself, “when the right box comes along I’ll send it in”. Today I happened across the perfect box😮.

I know it’s going to be a bit. BUT it doesn’t seem to keep me from refreshing my emails several times throughout the day!
Less than two hours after posting this I got the email from Sir Don letting me know it should be wrapped up tomorrow. She’s coming home boys!

Ok, I’ve had a little bit of time with the updates. Still putting it through its paces but here’s a quick take.
The level control is very nice to have. Works as it should and allows me to enjoy the amp a bit more while preserving what little of hearing I have left! Don was able to keep the Touch switch but it now located on the turret board. So make sure you like which position it is in before you screw everything back down. I want to say it has a bit more treble or upper mids but I need to spend more time with it. It’s dead silent, not that it was noisy before but some seem to always ask about that. Overall it’s still the EMS not very different from before but the level is nice to have. Full open gives you the beast in full form.
Looking forward to hearing it with the group this weekend. I’ll update as I get more time.

More time, absolutely love the level control. Really lets you play it in the spots you’d like to without pissing off bandmates. Knocks just enough off without sacrificing tone. JCM setting is very useful now, shoot really opened everything up more as one would suspect.
Other guitar player in the band used it all night, absolutely loved it. Said it’s just what it needed. He use to own one but it was too loud for the tone he wanted to play it at. He always said it was the tone he had in his head when he went in a Marshall hunt.

Hey gang, I just spotted the EMS head with the mod for sale at Humbucker Music. Their pic shows a knob where the Touch switch used to be. I haven't plugged into an EMS yet but I've been eyeballing it for years at this point, and this mod may be the trigger for me to take the leap. I'm a "moderate gain" player (JTM) and will sometimes go heavier, having grown up with JCM-800s.
For those of you who use the amp live, is it fair to say the Touch switch is not something you're messing with on the fly? It sounds to me that this mod's gains (no pun intended) outweigh the compromises.

First impressions: I forgot how loud this amp was after spending about 6 weeks with my Zplus exclusively. I wish that I could comment on if anything tonally changed on the circuit tweak, but my memory isn't that good. It does, however sound stellar. The Volume/MV are EXTREEMLY interactive. Using my old settings didn't work out at all as they overwhelmed the tubes and I lost chime and definition with my R0, but not as much so with my strat. It simply hit a plateau of compression that didn't sound good to my ears. This was with the volume and gain high and the MV very low. That said, once I rolled the volume back and played with the MV it started to come back to life. Idle is virtually silent, made me wonder if the standby was still on at times. More to come when I get home later. I'm very happy with the update and think that it was money well spent. Thanks Don!

Thanks for the update!
I would think if you turned the new master all the way up with your old settings, it should be super close to your old settings.
I talked to Dave (premium) about this a little while ago. He has the master mod, I don't. I stated something like "I love the amp as is and don't want to screw it up", and I can always pop an attenuator on it if I want, and sometimes I like what that does. His response was that it really adds to the flexibility and practicality of the amp. I get that and like that too. Sums it up in a nutshell.
The pre phase master affects the tone, and that's not a bad thing, like at lower setting you can thin out the amp a little and as you increase it, it adds weight. Like another tone control at lower volumes. Except, not you can fine tune that with the post phase master and just bring the volume down. It's probably a great option to have in that amp in particular, because yes it can get holy-**** loud if you want it to. It's a great amp, and not terribly forgiving which is a good thing.

You are correct sir! This mod really added to the flexibility of the amp. Once I figured out how to tweak the V/MV interaction better it all came together quickly. Plugged in my LP/Sunlion/Amp and can't seem to stop playing!
