Hello everyone! I have a new Maz38 mkII incoming, should be here by this weekend. I’m very stoked.
Question: I’m sure this has been covered but, if I may; what’s the consensus as far as speakers?
I have two 412s. A Bogner with Scumback M75s and J75s, and a Stagecraft—old Marshall spec—with Greenbacks and Vintage 30s. I will of course try the Maz with both. I’m wondering which I should try first? First impressions and all. Anyone have firsthand experience playing a Maz38 through these types of speakers/cabs?
Thanks y’all!!🤟🎸⚡️🎼

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new Maz!! My 1st Z was a Maz 38 but it was back in '08 so it was the 1st run of the 38 series Maz amps. depending on your style and the tones you are after an Alnico speaker will get you more clarity and chime, but at the time I used a G12h or a V30, and that covered the R&R sounds perfectly. There have been more speaker options available since then so I will step aside and let the current 38 owners speak their mind on what works best these days. You might want to describe the tones you are going to be looking for to help with the recommendations.

Welcome, and congrats on the 38!
Try both and just see what suits you more. I love the sound of a 4x12 and my heart sort of lies there, but I really adore the 38 in an open z zx12 cab with either a greenback or alnico gold. Where some amps seem to really benefit from the 4x12 thing, the 38 is already a big sounding amp and is surprisingly big sounding with the just the 1x12. I don't know why, but with the single greenback, I really hear that sort of grit the speaker adds with the 38 over other amps I've tried. The gold is a little louder, maybe a little cleaner, is a little more up front or present, and really starts to come alive when the amp is pushing at least some volume. Quieter, the gold feels a little sterile and the green is a little more at home. I haven't tried the amp in a 4x12 in quite a while.
However, was recently messing with a captor x load box/ir thing and sort of settled on an old 4x12 from the Friedman pack with celestion 65's. Rotated a bunch of amps through that, and the 38 sounded fantastic with that virtual cab. I guess I'm basically throwing out some observations on stuff I've tried with the amp.
Maybe the one thing I've tried that I didn't really care for is a single v30, but a v30 seems to work really well in combination with some other speakers to me, so maybe your v30/GB cab might be just the ticket. I have a Marshall 1960av which had the 4 v30s in it and I never really hit it off with that cab. Swapped the 2 bottom speakers with H30's and that cab is gorgeous sounding now. Maybe funny, but I don't really like a single v30 or h30 at all, but together, it sounds great, particularly with clean to low/medium gain amp settings. Also have a closed 2x12 with a v30 and alnico cream which sounds incredible with high gain amps, but really kind of crappy with clean amps. Maybe the point there is sometimes you just have to try stuff to see what works for you wether that be the cab, the speakers and combinations thereof, and of course the amp. It took me a long time time of swapping stuff around to arrive at those combinations. Also have another 4x12 I love with greenbacks and creambacks in X pattern, and that is the bomb too, but only really shines with certain amps too. Maybe the best thing I can tell you is that the 38 with a 1x12 green or gold is the bomb, and it's simple.

Welcome! Like Steve, my first Z was a Maz 38, made sometime in the early 2000's. It was a 1x12 combo and sounded great with a Celestion 70th Anniversary G12H-30, but I never tried it with a different speaker. With my Jrs I prefer a V30 or Greenback, so I would try the cab with those first. Keep in mind that you are required to report back with your findings.

I would love to crank my 38 through a 412. I almost picked an Avatar 412 loaded with V30 off Craigslist a couple months ago.
I know you aren’t looking for 112 suggestions, but my 38 came with a Lead 80. I’ve tried the amp through various speakers and this one always out shines them all.
