Hi guys,
I’m sorry if this question has been asked before. I feel like it has but haven’t found anything that Quito answered my question.
When comparing a half power switch option as available with most Zs today, how similar/dissimilar is it to something like a brake lite attenuator? Im assuming the HP switch doesn’t cut down as much volume as an attenuator. I heard it only reduces about 3 DB volume. Dows the HP switch affect only the output tubes? Which one tends to have less tone loss and more transparency? Thanks

Not really a direct answer but if it's natural sounding decibel reduction you're after, the Dr Z post phase inverter master volume design is very hard to beat. They've got those circuits tweaked to darn near perfection imho. I prefer it to either a half power switch or attenuator. PPIMV as seen on the Jetta, Cure, Maz Mk II series, and lovely new Z28 Mk II to name a few that I have experience with.

I like the idea of having the 1/2 power switch on my Maz38, however, I always like to feel full power and then use the Master to knock it down to tolerable levels.
So in summary, I don't use the 1/2 power switch on my Maz 38.

Same here, I prefer the Master to a half power option. Half power only knocks of about 3dB of volume anyway.

A good question is what's your goal also? Are you looking to drive the amp better in a live situation or looking to quiet it down for rehearsals or for playing around the house?
The tone piece is definitely important. But, the options also vary in terms of how much volume they can lower. So, finding a balance between the two to meet your needs is key.

Similar experience here. I had a half power switch on a non-Z amp and it didn't do as much as I wanted. I've tried three different attenuators over the years and wasn't happy with any of them. The MV on my Therapy is the best by far. Unfortunately, I found it too late in my playing life as I now only play clean and don't take advantage of it's functionality.
