played it in my studio and then the next day with the band …just spectacular! The band loved the sound. They kept talking about it throughout the session and even today. - the master volume works so well.. I can practice with it in my house with my wife sleeping in the next room. - the reverb is the best spring reverb ever! You can control it at a very granular level and the tails on it are just right! - the tone stack bypass is actually very useful. I could use this amp (almost) without an OD pedal. - plenty of power and TONS of clean headroom even at high volume. - most beautiful tones clean and with lots of distortion! I was concerned than my “American voiced” speakers might not be a good match but my Zilla Super Fat Boy 2x12 cab with WGS G12A (alnico) and Weber DT12 ( very alnico sounding).. both low efficiency, they sounded fantastic clean and filthy. With the band rockin’, the volume was around 12:00-2:00 and the master was around noon the whole night.. and I still could get clean at that volume (turning down the volume and turning up the master) if I wanted that. It had more gas on tap too if I need it. (Glad that I got the 38!) Our bass player and vocalist has a big bass rig and a massive PA and Tony can really hit those drums. Among other tunes, we played some fantastic Doors and Cream and early Jethro Tull - For A Thousand Mothers as well as some blues and some soft jazzy stuff too. The tone and vibe and thump were so much more killer than I had even hoped. So glad that I got the MAZ 38 mkii. My band is too. They almost insisted that I don’t bring any of my other (fine) amps haha Thanks Dr. Z!

Very nice setup! The Maz is hard to beat, I have the 18 and can only imagine the power of the 38. Great cab you have there too. 😊

I thought the 18 was everything I could ever want until I picked up a 38. Not to put down the 18 because its an amazing amp, but the 38 has more than just the extra head room.

I'm super glad that I got the 38. Mine doesn't have the 1/2 power switch.. not sure why. I can't image that the 1/2 power switch would give me anything i need either because this master volume really works so well. With that, I think I could take this amp to a moderate-volume gig confident that it wouldn't overpower the stage volume.

Mine doesn’t either, but it’s an earlier model that had the mkii done before I got it. So it doesn’t have the tone by pass. I had the 18 which I had sent in for the mkii when I got the 38. The 18 was a nr, but even with the reverb all the way down on the 38 the amps had a different feel. I thought the 38 had just enough more of a clean sizzle that it beat the 18. For what I do I can’t imagine the 1/2 power switch would get me something that I’m not already getting with the master.

I had a Dr. Z. Remedy with 1/2 power switch (4x6V6 power tubes) and adjustable tone-stack bypass. I'm not certain how the 1/2 was implemented... only using 2 tubes? not sure. I mostly played it in 1/2 power mode as at that time i didn't have a situation where I could turn it up without the police coming to my house hehe. It sounded great in 20 watt mode but it sounded much better in full power mode. Was their more gain at lower volume, quicker breakup in 1/2 power mode? Yeah.. maybe but as I remember it, it wasn't much different than turning down the master volume and turning up the Hi and Lo volumes.. in the case of the MAZ the Volume (gain). I've connected my new MAZ 38 Mkii to my attenuator and this is the first amp where it sounds just as good gain-wise using the master volume vs. turning it up into gain and using the attenuator to knock down the DB level. I don't know how doc Z. does it.. but it's really, really good!

100% on the Master, especially on more recent amps from Doc like the mkii's. No need to fuss with attenuators.

Congrats, the MAZ38 MKII is a beast, 3 decades of evolution and refinement, as good as it gets! I think the 1/2 power was only available on the non-reverb MKII. I have a MKII 38NR and honestly never use the half power, prefer the sound of the full quad even at lower volume. Something about a quad of 84’s, girth and balls even at lower level.
