I have a Red Dr Z NOVA 1x12 combo that I got as they were first released. It even has a single digit seriel number.
I used it a church for a long time when we had a drummer but the last while we have gone with a smaller band so I use a Z28 at church now.
When my NOVA came home I parked it under my work from home desk and use it a lot for trying out pickup designs. Always sounds great at low volume with a great master volume control.
I love the cleans and the over drive switch is really killer. It's a great amp.
Since the time I have owned it I haven't ever really cranked it up and let 'er rip . . . . until last night!
My basement is transforming back into a studio and jam space (for almost 20 years it was homeschooling room, kids play area and general storage).
Last night my youngest son Joshua was jamming on his drum kit with some newly installed stage lighting on. I came down stairs to see how it looked and he took off his earmuffs and shouted for me to grab a guitar and jam with him a while.
I went to my desk and pulled out the NOVA !!
We started playing and he kept telling to turn it up (by the way, mom wasn't home).
I turned the master volume up past noon, main volume turned to 1 o'clock and overdrive up to about 2 o'clock. I was using my Parker with some fairly hot prototype Alnico 2 magnent pickups.
The thick sweet blooming over drive was simply glorious! Chords were fat and rich with a sweet drift into feedback if you let the chord ring out long enough. What was especially fun was how clear the top end was in my tone. I had plenty of beefy tone but was really impressed with how much top end was cutting through. I played some combinations of Chords and lead lines with virtually no difference in volume.
Wow, that was so much fun!!! We played for almost an hour. I was half expecting to find the police at my front door but thankfully I have very gracious neighbors!!
I don't think the NOVA is going back under my desk for a while!!
Thanks Dr Z!!
God bless,
Todd
