Hey fellas, I think this is too good not to share. I don't know why I didn't think of this years ago...
You know how some guitar stands use foam rubber that is said to be harmful to nitro guitar finishes? It softens the nitro up and will ruin a great finish. So here's a hack for ya!
Take a couple of pairs of old socks and cut the top inch or two off, then cut that circle into a straight piece. It's folded over and (EDIT: is already) stitched into a hem that makes a tube that's perfect for sliding over the foam rubber on the guitar stand. I went a step further and lashed it down so it wouldn't come unraveled.
It may be over thinking this, but now I can leave my guitars on my stands without any worry about hurting that great nitro finish.

It's folded over and stitched into a hem I can adjust action, set neck relief, slot a nut, intonate, set pickup height, change tubes, and set bias. But “stitch a hem”?!?!? I’d lose a finger. Great idea though 👍

Great idea though 👍 To clarify, the hem's already there. That's the beauty of the hack...cut the top off your socks and stretch it over the stand. What's on my finger is what the top of the sock is already like. No sewing involved. And yeah...when I get near a sewing needle I'm likely to stitch my fingers together!

I cut the fingers and finger tips off of some old (undyed) fleece lined winter gloves, turned them lining side out, and put them on my String Swing hangers.
I actually find the fingerless winter weight gloves useful.

Oh. And it’s a great idea to wash the socks first. You’re welcome!

This is the EXACT reason I buy and love SATIN finish guitars! lol

I actually find the fingerless winter weight gloves useful. I have never had a bare String Swing hanger damage any nitro finish of any type or brand guitar no matter how long the guitar was in it. Same thing goes for Hercules stands. This even includes LP reissues which I figure probably have pretty sensitive nitro. I did a lot of research before trusting these brands, including blowing up pics of vintage guitar dealers to see what they were using, etc. I will admit to checking the guitars daily for a long time until I was certain. I guess there’s always an exception somewhere but so far I haven’t found one.

I thought that only applied to those old stands from the 80's that used a specific type of rubber? Maybe I should look at some of my guitars...

I too have never had a problem with the newer stands. But...I was inspired to do it when I opened up my new guitar a couple of days ago and smelled that sweet nitro lacquer. The guitar was built only 4 months ago, so it was a 'better safe than sorry' moment for me.
And so, now I am worry free. About that particular thing.

I was just converting the gloves to fingerless and figured I'd use the lopped off fingers for something. I thought that the idea might come in handy for someone with older or non SS hangers. The SS hangers are great. It seemed to fit with the general idea of this thread.
