So my wife’s aunt is down sizing and offered me a couple instruments prior to us all being at a family wedding. The mandolin was what made me say yes even though I knew it wasn’t anything spectacular (Harmony). I was really surprised to get the two cases home and opened the old bass case to find a Gibson bass shaped like a SG. It has some life on it, actually if it were a guitar I would be all over myself. Broken in, but besides some bass arse belt rash it’s in nice shape. Curious about nailing down a date. Not sure how uniform serial numbers between guitars and basses are. It’s stamped with Made in USA and has a six digit serial number starting with 89xxxx. Any wisdom on a date? Is it an ‘89? Seems like it could be older. Pots don’t have serial numbers visible so that isn’t a good back up.

On Gibson's site I found that they didn't start stamping Made in the USA until 1970. And that they reused numbers from the 60's in the 70's. As long as they didn't use a different system for basses than guitars I think I have this narrowed down to a '73-74. It's odd though, I can't find photos of other ones with this pickup or the three way switch.

That or an EB-0. 1 or 2 pickups? Is the headstock the regular style or slotted for the strings?

That or an EB-0. 1 or 2 pickups? Is the headstock the regular style or slotted for the strings? I finally found that it’s a EB4L. The L is for long scale and sometimes only referred to as EB4. The 4 is because the single pickup has four independent coils for each pole. www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/EB4L.php
