I had a gig last night and it was in a huge gymnasium type building. Very reflective, live room. I was playing my 1x12 Z-Plus and my rhythm guitar player was playing a 2x12 Line 6. I had a wireless so I walked out in the middle of the room at soundcheck and was setting volumes between us. He was so much louder, I ended up cranking my Z-Plus up to around 3:00 on the Master. It's the loudest I've ever had to crank that amp. Sounded glorious, and covered the big room well.
I have a good SPL meter, a Reed R8060. It's calibrated to ANSI standards. I have done some testing and I know that with the same amplifier settings a 2x12 cab is not louder than a 1x12. I was surprised to learn that the two cabs are very close in SPL output (Both cabs were loaded with G12H30 speakers, one 8 ohm and two 16 ohms in parallel for 8).
So how much better would a 2X12 project sound than a 1x12 at the same volume level? Is it worth slagging that much more gear? If a 2x12 would give me more authority out front without blowing the band away, I'd be all for it.
Asking for a friend.

Worth the weight (if health isn't an issue)!

Mine was too dang heavy for this old back. You don't mic the guitars? I run with the assumption that if my small vocal PA (QSCs) can fill the space for vocals, it can handle some guitar to fill it out. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for the feedback. We don't mic the guitars, and only use the leader's small PA for vocals. So it comes down to getting out to the audience without blowing the band away (we're set up behind the drums and vocalists).
Anyone else had a similar experience?
