I'm building up an old Hammond organ power amp into a guitar amp (4x6V6, or make convert to 2x6L6). Perfect sized chassis, HUGE iron...just needs a preamp stage, tonestack and phase inverter. I've been looking at the Ghia tone control as the front runner, but in the process, looked at the Stang Ray as well. They are remarkably similar, near identical, minus the VALUES of the components. It never really dawned on me they would be THAT close, but plugging them into a tone stack calculator, they even look very close. This baffles me because everyone talks about how scooped the Ray is, but that's never says that about the Ghia or Mazerati. Maybe it's because the 12ax7 vs EF86? But even that seems counterintuitive as the EF86 is generally more mid heavy. Fascinating!
What I am curious is if the TONE controls behave similarly, or if one is generally more preferred? (I know the Ray has a bright cap and a cut control, so more options).
So any of you Ray owners ever compared one to a Ghia or Mazerati? At this point, I'm wondering which component scheme to go with. Also, did some tweaking in the calculator to try to do something middle of the road. I'm starting form scratch so I can buy the parts for either scheme. Due to chassis layout though, its not friendly to tweaking/sampling the different component values, so I kinda want to pick one and go for it.

What a cool project! I'd love to know how it goes! Sorry, can't help compare the two. I like the ghia tone control. I also like the Jetta. They are very different but both work great. What speaker are you thinking? What tone are you going for overall?

It’s a unique amp. The speakers are field coil speakers from the organ console. So I have to use them since the field coils affect the bias circuit. Once I get the amp working I may consider modding the amp to use my “normal” permanent magnetic speakers
