Just bought this 65 Melody Maker. I'm going to upgrade it with a new Lollar MM P90 and matching pick guard, a new wiring harness and a Mojoaxe wraparound compensated bridge.
The guitar is a player grade but has zero cracks, breaks, repairs, and came with a like new hardshell case. I'm going to keep the original pick guard and wiring, but will sell the SD Hot Rails PU (any interest?)

I bet that thing will kill. They really don't look that different design wise from an SG. To that end, I friend of mine has an all original 64 sg that just kills. He never plays it, and won't part with it. I tried to get close with a custom shop sg and some super expensive pickups, and it's not really close at all. Have fun with that!

Does it need a fret job while you're at it? (Maybe that's just the Tom Bukovac influence in me.) Nice score!

I say try to stick with the original frets. They made it this far, and there are lots of plusses to smaller frets too.

How sweet! I briefly had a Melody Maker back in the late '60s and stupidly let it go. I was young...but I'd love to find a project like that.
Where did you find it? I haven't looked but I can't remember the last time I saw one for sale.

These old mahogany Gibsons and Epiphones can sing like no other solid body guitar, unplugged! I had an early '60s Epiphone Olympic. I'm not sure why I parted with it!
Mine had already been routed for a humbucker so I had a P90 made for it (if I recall, it was a Casino base and cover so it'd fit between the pickguard and the strings with a bridge wind) and turned it into a poor man's Coronet. The guitar only weighed about 5-1/2 pounds!

I haven't looked but I can't remember the last time I saw one for sale. I found it on Reverb. I was looking at several but decided to give this one a try. Made an offer and the seller took it. The price made me comfortable to add the upgrades. I'll have way less in it than most of the MM's listed.

UPDATE - I took the MM to our local guitar tech to finish it up. He's going to do the wiring, then do a setup and see if we need a new nut and/or any fret work. I totally trust him.....he's done several jobs for me including re-fretting my ol 335. He's the best around here. So bottom line....I won't see the guitar for probably 3 weeks or so. I'll report back at that time!

Got the MM back today. New Lollar Melody Maker P90 with their pick guard, new wiring harness w witch hat knobbies and Mojoaxe compensated bridge. My tech said it didn't need fret or nut work. It sounds and plays great! I'm real pleased with how it turned out.
