Last year I took my Nova down to Cleveland to have some upgrades done; It is Serial #002 and so it didn't have the Metro Effects Loop in it. While it was there I asked Don if he could make the amp a little brighter, and he obliged. Then last year it kind of fell out of rotation, I was really into playing the Z-Plus, my Maz 18NR, Z-Lux, Maz 8, and CAZ-45, so I neglected it.
This morning I couldn't sleep and was up at 3:00AM and felt like working on some gear. I changed pickups in my Les Paul Premium Plus, and pulled my Nova out of the corner.
"Man, that sounds BRIGHT, says I"...and realized that it was my hearing that had needed brightening, not the amp. My new hearing aids fixed that but now my Nova is tuned for a half-deaf guitar player. So I went downstairs to my electronics bench and restored the amp back to stock, and re-installed the G12H-30 speaker. Don had been kind enough to tell me exactly what he had done to the amp, and it was an easy 3 component fix.
Wow, wow, wow. That amp is so smokin' great sounding again, and I gotta tell you: if your ears are failing you, go see an audiologist. It's literally changed my life and has been terrific for my music. I was ready to give up playing out, and now I'm back in the thick of it. I remember why I had been so stoked at Z-Fest when I got to play it at the Saturday jam. It's just a great, great amp. Probably the only amp I would really feel comfortable with playing a gig without pedals.

I think our hearing changes daily with humidity or temp or who knows what. Glad the aids are working out, and. you can always not use them for another perspective too.

I gotta admit, I haven't gigged my Nova in quite a while. My Cure just gets the nod for live work these days (and has since I bought it in year 1 of production). I may need to get the Nova out soon.

I'm playing a gig tonight with Ricky Lynn Gregg and will be playing my pink Charvel through my Nova. I know I will have great tone because my Nova is red.

"I think our hearing changes daily with humidity or temp or who knows what." - This! Could be our mood, who knows.
I think our perspective changes over time in what we've "learned" over that period too. Shelving something for a while and then coming back to it later can be a real eye opener too.
Kudos for Dave for always having that inquisitive mind and just trying stuff. I hope I have your energy and will at 70!

I know it was a while ago, but how did the gig with the nova go? The Nova hasn't let me down yet. I get a lot of compliments on my Nova. The sound men love it.
