My questions are: What might cause the tone knob to be rather unusable with this thin/grainy characteristic? Could it be the MV set to low? What is the stock level setting on the FX loop trim pot? I think it was supposed to be around 11:00...there's a little notch on the dial with two small dots on each side of the notch which I assume is the setting point. The front end of that Jetta is made up of only 1/2 of a 12ax7, so the tone of that amp relies on the full tone of the 7591's. Yes the Tone control is very active, but would you rather have a control that does virtually nothing ? The E/F loop should be set at the lower + 4 position . I have had may discussions with George Metropolis about this, my only take away is the upper -20 level only increases the noise floor.

My Jetta has always sounded great. The volume and tone controls are really usable and interactive with one another. The master is fairly transparent. Mine has never sounded thin by any stretch.

I should clarify when I find the tone grainy and thin, I mean literally the tone knob. I have dialed in and out of many very amazing lead tones since I've had it. As simple as it is, I do find it to be the best amp I've had.
Dr - would you let me know what the factory setting is for the Fx loop trim pot on the inside of the amp?

Over a year now, and the Jetta is my go to amp. No pedals except the occasional Wah. Transparency and authority! Early Terry Kath. Volume and Tone maxed , and MV set to room. I use guitar volume and tone for grid or cleanish……..Doc really knocked it out of the park on this one!!, wish I had a trusted amp tech add Trem/vibr
No issues with grainy and never thin…..
Thanks Doc

Greetings, I've had me Jetta for almost 2 years now...I bought it for the build quality, zero loss fx loop and simplicity to use as a high quality pedal platform. I've been collecting various drive boxes to run with it, my favourite yet to be dethroned is the Truetone J&H as I love a saturated shred tone...and with levels and guitar/pick-up combination I've been able to get a really thick and full lead tone and at a reasonable level. Running it into the Dr Z. 1X12 with V30. I've used various combinations of volume/tone ratios but always found no matter what the tone always comes out to sound thin and grainy...maybe more lately and seems that overall my satisfaction with the tone is intermittent. I don't usually run the tone past 9:00 before it gets grainy sounding. MV, I can usually go around 9:00 - 11:00 but perhaps I need to attenuate the amp and crank that master up to really make usable that tone knob? I've tested with 3 or 4 different guitars, various pick-ups...and even a second 1X12 mesa cab, also with a V30. I did replace the powertubes recently as well as the rectifier tube, both with the same type of tubes as original. I've rolled preamp tubes with some other JJs I had on hand. The only thing I've tinkered with on the inside of the amp is the -20 / +4 effects switch. I have it set for -20 pedal effects. I wouldn't mind clarification as to what the stock setting is supposed to be on the FX level trim pot as I've moved that a little in either direction and worry I'm off the original spec. The only reason I've adjusted it is because with high gain settings and a delay in the loop it seems to clip the delay where the repeats distort in a really nasty way. I find with volume less than half I don't have that problem and can give the amp more MV and thickness. My questions are: What might cause the tone knob to be rather unusable with this thin/grainy characteristic? Could it be the MV set to low? What is the stock level setting on the FX loop trim pot? I think it was supposed to be around 11:00...there's a little notch on the dial with two small dots on each side of the notch which I assume is the setting point. wow, I never had a problem with the Jetta's high end being thin, even with the g12h30 - it's a pretty full robust amp you mentioned using a V30 have you considered a speaker with some warmer highs, perhaps a z12, an A series, or even a higher wattage greenback derivative? it might be as simple as dialing in the right speaker

Thanks, everyone. I think the culprit was a pedal on the fritz and/or ppwer adapter.
I used an attenuator and cranked the hell out of the MV, volume and tone and felt like a new amp.
I think I'll look for another good dirt box to run into this thing and replace what I've been using.

That’s good news. I bet I’ve had to learn this lesson 1,000 times so far - if there’s a problem with the amp, take everything out of the signal chain and see how guitar straight to amp sounds. If that’s good start adding stuff back in one at a time to find the real culprit. Time consuming, but comforting when you confirm it’s not the amp but one pedal, or cable, or connector.

V3O is kind of a benchmark speaker for me I've used in many cabinets over the years. I had a soldano hot rod and 4x12 with eminence legends which I preferred so once I get my core tones dialed in and my new pickups in my guitar I think I will look at getting another eminence legend for the cabinet. You know you're narrowing down your tone once you're down to pick ups and speakers, right?
