OK boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, sons and daughters, men and women and everybody else!!!!! This amp is off the charts!! Just what I was needing. I've had most Z amp models over the years. All were great. Some fit my wants and needs better than others. My favorites being the Therapy, ZWreck & JETTA. With honorable mention going to the Maz18 NR( The modern-day classic) and my first Z years ago, a blonde 2-10 Ghia. (Wish I still had THAT amp!) Second honorable mentions going to the Antidote, Remedy and Z28 of course!!! A few others sprinkled in along the way, but the ones mentioned floated my boat specifically. But THIS amp.....Whoa... For me, it's everything. I'm sure it's partly the MkII recipe. It's so smooth. Yet plenty of highs, chime and sparkle....And the girth. There is no replacement for big iron, even at low volumes for my ears. The master volume is amazing. It was waiting on my doorstep when I got home from work yesterday. I quickly cranked it up and could not stop for over an hour. When I got home from a comedy club event, I played another hour at bedroom levels and smiles continued.... The 38 MkII reminds me a lot of the Therapy tone wise. I guess it's the Treble, Mid & Bass controls and the Volume & Master.......but it's got the EL84 thing going on as well. The half power switch is really cool as well. The amp sounds and responds the same, just half the volume. That's really cool, but with the volume and Master volume being so well executed, not sure how much I'll use that. To early to tell. Also the new EQ bypass switch is great! I love the new look and regular guitar cord functionality. I was surprised and overjoyed that a battery option was inside as well. I love battery usage, especially around the house. ( I just noticed the Dr Z website mentions the battery option, but I obviously overlooked that) I may order another to mount on a pedal board. This amp is really a extremely versatile tonal workhorse. Everything, Perry, Adam, Russell and a few others said it is. I am shocked this amp is not more popular. I have a feeling this Maz38 MkII might get a second wind in popularity.... This is also my first Z in black with a Salt-N-Pepper grill.....May need a 2-12 Backline cab to match!! Thanks again Doc for yet another superior tone machine!! More to come~

Cool first impressions. It's a special and unique amp for sure. Whenever I go through that thought process of "if I can only have one", that would probably be it.
I didn't know about the battery! Ditto on the salt and pepper grill cloth. The oxblood is really beautiful in person too, and even the black cabs are really classy looking too.
Also, I really dig the open 1x12 with a greenback and the 38 (not sure why), and also the gold, but it feels like you have to push the gold a little to get it moving.

Yes it is special and I feel ya on the "if I can only have one"!! I am living in South Florida kind of temporary until I can get back home to South Carolina where all my other amps and cabinets are. So for now, I'm playing it through a little Fat Jimmy pine 1-12 cab with a Gold. (My favorite speaker)! Tempted to order a Z Backline with 2 Golds!

What is this battery option you are referring to?

What is this battery option you are referring to? It’s the battery option on the new switch for the tonestack bypass (I think made by Earthquaker Devices). I think it can take a 9-volt adapter or battery to power the LED on the pedal.

Had the update done a while back on my Maz 38. It was already my go to amp before the update. The update really turned the amp into maybe a bit more versatile amp. Now I have an 18 and a 38 in one package with even more options using the hi and lo inputs. I have had a host of Z amp models through the years and the maz 38 is the only one I have not parted with since I have had it. I do not plan to ever part with it. The one amp I wish I still had is the stang ray. Loved that amp and wish I still had it. The Maz is a great amp and I would recommend the MkII update to anyone.

Just ordered a 2-12 Backline cab Salt-n-Pepper grill w/ 2 Golds! I will post photo's and maybe an iPhone sample when it arrives. I'm sure this will be epic!!!
Love the edge of break-up tones....then hit the tone by-pass for a little more.....then a clean boost or CoT for more more! Heavenly~

Congrats! I have an updated 2x12 (2 blues) that has been my main amp for years. Last gig I used just a boost pedal and a wah for the pedal board. Sounds just so amazing all the time. I use the cut knob to adjust to different guitars. If ever you notice it is losing the magic a bit, try a new set of el84s. It should liven right back up again. My only complaint at all would be that it is a bit tough on power tubes, but what a sound!

The 38 MkII reminds me a lot of the Therapy tone wise. I guess it's the Treble, Mid & Bass controls and the Volume & Master.......but it's got the EL84 thing going on as well. Interesting. My Therapy is the Z I bonded least with. Which surprised me because I love 6L6 amps normally. I had passed that along years before I picked up my Maz 38 so I can't really say I have a comparison for the two, but I agree with your love on the 38. Mine is a studio that had the mkii update done before I got it. So it's missing the eq bypass and the 1/2 power, but still the amp I've had the longest with no plans to change that.

Playing it through one Gold now....Looking forward to TWO Golds!!

Congrats Mark, totally agree, the MAZ38 MKII is a tuff amp to top, 30 years of Z polishing that design.

Happy for you, Mark! I'd get a 38 myself but I've got a Maz 18NR MKII that's really an amazing amp. It's one of my favorite Z amps and I've never come close to needing more power. I've done outdoor gigs with it, so I'm not going to go for the 38. Yet.

Congrats Mark, totally agree, the MAZ38 MKII is a tuff amp to top, 30 years of Z polishing that design. I agree back at ya! I had a 2-10 Maz38 for a bit years ago.....This amp is much softer and sweeter, but has ample power and authority. Sounds amazing at low volumes that gives way to a HULK of an amp when cranked up a bit. Can't wait to hear it with the 2-12 Backline w/Gold's! Also looking forward to playing it through my 4-12's when I get back home to SC.
