Hey all,
I have read here and there that the zbest doesn’t really sound its best until you are 15’ or so away from it. Is there truth to that?
While I know long throw can hit the back of the room and sound good, that’s different from saying it doesn’t sound good closer up so I’m trying to clarify.
I play in smaller rehearsal spaces, and mic the cab playing out usually. Don’t want to get something that isn’t going to sound good a few feet away. Appreciate any firsthand comments from experience!

While I think my Zbest sounds good where ever I stand but I do find that it starts sounding even better when I am at least 8 feet or so away. To my ear, and please keep in mind that many people have better ears than I do, it seems at that distance that I am hearing the contribution from both speakers better. Mine has the stock G12H and the Vintage 30. I mostly use it in my living room but have had it at stage volume on occasions.

It is designed as a “long throw cab”….you can drive a sports car slow, but it’s nature comes out at speed. Likewise, you will appreciate the design of the ZBest most in a performance application….perhaps the 2x12 open back cab would be better for more applications of use.
ZBest is very attractive looking….I’m guessing you’d enjoy it if you are drawn to it.

Two issues here. First, and the reason I don't like cabs with different speakers. When you mic them (assuming a close mic) you have to chose just one speaker so the mic'd sound will be different than the total cabinet sound. Second, my perception of long throw cabs is that the responses of the individual speakers join together to produce a level that is stronger on-axis than normal and usually favors a particular frequency band. It takes some distance in front of the speakers for this to happen.
