Greetings,
I have the Jetta head and v30 1X12 now and enjoy it a lot. I came to the Jetta and Dr Z after first purchasing and subsequently returning the Vox AC30 head and 2X12 because I found it too loud, I didn't like the greenbacks and the loop didn't work with a delay when the front was driven really hard without the repeats distorting. As well, I could have sworn there was some weird electronic frequency noises on certain notes that I chalked up to it being made in China.
Jetta checked all the boxes, MV works great, takes pedals well, USA made, handwired, bulletproof effects loop and sterling customer service record.
I can't help but want more Dr Z product and thinking about replacing the Jetta with a Maz 38. I would keep both but as a hobby player and soon to be home recording, I can't justify having both.
I loved the midrangy, overdriven and saturated Vox sound but a storied company like that doesn't really have anything really quality these days and the loop is very poor. My hope is that the Maz 38 is what I wanted the AC30 to be, and more. Am I on the right thinking with that?
What type of drive does it have?
I saw a video on youtube, guy named Frankie, maybe he's on this forum. He's playing a Maz 38 and PRS and the tone is warm and saturated...I'd love to be on a guitar behind that type of sound.

With the master volume on the 38 mkii you can get all sorts of gain and the eq section is great. I'm assuming if you like the Vox you don't need shredder gain, but I find you can get pretty heavy beyond what the amp has with pedals. But I don't really play hard stuff so I'm not the best judge of how it would practically take it.
I had a Maz 18 that I loved. I really just wanted it in a 112 studio. I got a good deal on a 38 112 studio with the mkii already done. I planned to swap the two amps, but loved the extra headroom I got with the 38. Honestly with the master it can get really quiet and still sound great. Besides the extra few tubes I'm not sure why there isn't a bigger market for the 38. If people could play through this amp there would be a ton of converts. You are definitely on the right path.
I've had a number of Z's, but not a Jetta so I can't say much about how they compare.

The person you mentioned that was playing the 38 is Frankie Starr. He’s an extraordinarily talented player, not sure if he still visits the forum much. He definitely inspired me to get into Dr Z amps many years ago.
