Anyone ever do a speaker swap with their Zbest cab? I've got a CAZ45 and I'm thinking about putting in some greenbacks. Are the cabs tuned to specific speakers? I thought I read that somewhere.

I've read ported cabinets are often tuned to the speakers being used, but don't know about the Z Best. I've also read at least a couple posts here that people have swapped out speakers and seemed to like the results. No first hand experience here, so I'm not much real help.

Doc picked the speaker to best compliment the Z Best and each other. I swapped in greenbacks, tone tubbys, Eminence CV65/Red Fangs. I found for me the cab just projected to much and was too big and heavy for me to want to move it. around .

I have a V30 and G12H Creamback in mine. I like it. I don’t typically care for V30s but they do sound real good in the z best. I think swapping is acceptible as I have seen the z best sold “stock” with:
-v30 & g12H30 (Anni) - v30 and v30 - creamback M and v30 (caz)

It is a tuned cab. Somewhere I saw Doc mention this. He talked about how the different dimension of the port affected different parts of the tone. I think he basically said they picked the speakers for their highs, and then tuned the port to give them the mids and lows they wanted. This doesn't mean it will sound bad or better with different speakers. I'd be interested to know if the newer one with a creamback instead of the g12h30 is tuned differently.

Yup, I too remember that being Doc's explanation in that shop-tour/product-demo video many years back.

I have a friend who used to use a MAZ 18 w/Greenback but sometimes played it through a Z-Best with V30 & G12H on large stages. A very versatile set-up. He could adapt that rig to play anywhere. That was one of the reasons that convinced me to buy my first Z.

I put greenbacks in my Z-best. It was fine. Greenbacks are my favorite guitar speaker, and I enjoyed the lower db.

I’ve got a Weber legacy (greenback) and the original V30 in my Zbest. They sound great when mic’d individually..V30 more versatile of the two. Together it doesnt have the “swirl” of the V30 /H30 combination…but the high’s are a little tamer. It’s give and take I suppose.
