My current gig requires that some stuff be played on a baritone guitar. I've been using a Jazzmaster tuned down to D for some of it and a harmonizer pedal for some other things. Although the JM pickups do a remarkable job for baritone I would like to return that guitar back to regular duty. I've got some Tele parts and a couple of Tele bodies laying around and an original Danelectro lipstick pickup so I would like to build a dedicated bari guitar using those. What I need is a neck. I see Warmoth has conversion necks and I have always had good luck with their stuff. Fender also sells a "Sub-Sonic" Telecaster neck. The scale length of those two is a bit different. Any thoughts on that? Also I am undecided as to fretboard wood. Rosewood/pau ferro vs maple. Thoughts on that?

I had "my guy" put this together using a Warmoth neck several years ago. I want to say it's 27+" scale length. Sounds great for the one song I "used" to use it on. :-P

Can I ask a question? What type of stuff are you doing that requires a baritone guitar?
I'm the guy that if I was doing an electric gig where maybe a few tunes could have used an acoustic, I was not taking an acoustic. And, visa versa. So, I'm curious and guessing I'm going to learn something here.

At the last few guitar shows I've been at, Danelectro baritones, though few, could be had for $250 to $300. You might do better to go that route, unless you are in to doing the building thing.

Hippies and Cowboys/Cody Jinks, Guitar Town/Steve Earle, & lots of '60s and '70s classic country that you might not realize uses one unless you listen close. The Danelectro Longhorn bass was the weapon of choice for that, thus my interest in using the lipstick pickup I have.

Haven't heard Guitar Town in a while. Time to fire it up. A quick Google search shows that they're also used in some heavy metal stuff. That's a wide breadth. I did learn something and will listen with a educated ear.

Unfortunately we don't have guitar shows in this area anymore and I have not seen any used baris in any of the local stores. I've checked the usual on-line sources but have not seen any for less than $550 and that doesn't include shipping, etc. And yes, I've built lots of guitars which is the reason I have parts laying around and it would be good to be able to use them.

I thought you literally meant that 60's Hippies and Classic Cowboy Country type singers/guitarists used baritone guitars and that some guy named Cody Jinks must be a Hippie or a Cowboy. That's funny! And, that's a pretty cool song. I can definitely see it getting some crowd participation when you fire it up. This Rocker/Blues Guy will have to check out a little more Cody Jinks. Thanks Again!

Here’s a pic of the baritone Tele I put together a couple years ago. Warmoth conversion neck. 28.90” scale, I was hoping to get as close to the 30” scale Fender used on their Bass VI and I’d say for running this in B-b standard tuning it works really well! It’s the guitar I pick up most often when sittin around the house and also use it for some more ambient stuff that I play. But I told myself I was gettin’ it to learn some old tic-tac baselines, I should probably get on that!
