Recently, I traded up on a Z-Lux from a hand wired Princeton… needed more headroom. The PR was amazing, but I’m not missing it:)
Anyway, I love this amp without pedals… I like pedals, but I feel like they almost take away from the sound I get when straight in… maybe it’s just MY pedals;) but, I’m really enjoying this simple but very sweet setup.
Reverb, Trem, and volume/tone controls… all I need. Who knew? Great, great amp.

I agree when I had my Z-Lux that was the best tone just straight in no pedals.

Agree with Randy, best left to guitar and cable. Great amp!

My theory is that since the components in pedals aren’t nearly as hi-fi as the components in the Z-Lux, they end up taking from the hi-fi feel and kind of destroying the tone a little. The only pedal I still use with the Z-Lux is a new Boss DD-8 delay. I have 16 pedals and don’t use any of the other ones with this amp, unless I’m playing really quiet on 20 watts, then I will use me xotic compressor to tighten up the sound. That’s at below speaking volume.

I wanted to chime in about "Straight in" to the Z-Lux. When the original tubes were in the amp, the 6V6's, I found it hard to pair it with overdrive and compression. I swapped out those for some Tung Sol 5881 reissues and now the amp is much more friendly to my compression and overdrive pedals. I'm using a Boss CS-2 compressor, the older one. I use it mostly with overdrive and distortion. It has a more natural sound than the CS-3 - in fact, it's quite a good compressor. And I have an Xotic effects comp that I mostly use. I have a Keeley modded SD-1 with a germanium diode I always run if I've got it on, and a Seymour Duncan 805 overdrive that I use for rootsy blues stuff. The point is, I don't really consider these pedals boutique like some of the overdrive recommendations in threads in the Z forums. The change to 5881s really smoothed out the character of the amp, kind of taming it slightly and making it more Fenderesque in my opinion. Someone else said that in the Z forums and I think he's spot on. But I will say this, I don't need a single pedal still. I've had this amp (Z-Lux) for about 7 months now and I am still amazed at how great it sounds!
I forgot to mention - I use the compression when I'm playing at low volumes, like at conversation level or lower. The Z-Lux sounds amazing with the 6V6's also. It has more character and grit with 6V6's.
