I am going to throw out a stupid question. I’m ok with that.
Tonight I found THE sound I’ve wanted forever for my LP Jr using my…Mini Z. I can’t get the same sound from the Ghia(yes, using the same speaker…). I’ve swept the tone knob all night long trying to get it there and I think I’ve lost perspective at this point. So I guess the question is…are the circuits just too dissimilar to be able to match tones across the two amps?

There are tons of variables involved in amp design and voicing. One of the most obvious differences between these two amps that the mini is a single ended class a design whereas the ghia is push pull. This will likely make the most significant change you are hearing and feeling. Then there’s voicing, amount of gain, etc. That’s what’s cool about Docs designs, they’re all different with little to no redundancy. You can get closer with the Maz and ghia, but the mini is its own, badass thing.

I'm assuming you're tweaking the volume along with the tone to get there. I kind of like sticking with the same settings. So, I might be searching for a sound and maybe just messing with the tone control. I have to remind myself that tone can sound different depending on where my volume is set whether it's my Ghia, Maz Jr, or even Marshall. One other note to add. It sounds like you were working it for a while. I'll find that on a given day, one amp just isn't providing that magic. I'll swap to a different amp. And, then I'll go back to the first amp the next day and there's that magic. So, while we're adjusting tone, volume, etc, we have to remember to adjust our 'Perception' at times. So, one piece of advice is try again. On the other had, if you've found "THE Sound". Dang! Just play that thang!

Thanks for the feedback.
Just thought I throw that out for discussion. I’m plenty happy with the sounds from the Ghia, just thought I’d be able to dial in something really close to what I was getting from the Mini, but bigger.
Surprisingly(?) I was able to get a Pro Jr real real close tonight. So it’s all good.
