Just traded my Morgan AC20 Deluxe for a Z-Wreck combo this afternoon, couldn't be more stoked about this trade!!
While the Morgan was a great amp, I've wanted the Z-Wreck Jr since they were released and have really regretted getting rid of my Z-Wreck Sr several years ago.
I've had just about every EL84 offering from Dr. Z, even the Z-Wreck Sr (as mentioned above)....I currently have a Maz 18 Mk.II (which I love)..... But, I'm glad to have another Wreck, especially one that I can play in a bedroom/guitar room as well at small to large gigs!
This thing sounds amazing, just as the Z-Wreck Sr, but I'm thinking I see a Celestion Blue or Gold in the near future? I just like the way AlNiCo speakers compress, in comparison to ceramic speaker....But, I'm going to give it a few gigs (and gig money) before I make a final decision. I've got a Blue in my Maz, I may do some swapping??
****UPDATE: OK, I just tried the Blue..... Loved the compressed feel and top end, plus the added low end.... but too many honky-mids (can I say that?). Maybe the Gold?
Regardless....Greenback or Blue, the Wreck Jr is a absolute complete winner with a great lineage from Dr. Z and Ken Fischer (sp). It's my favorite "angry" AC15/AC30 style amp ever made.
If anyone is curious what the difference in the Maz 18 Mk.II and Z-Wreck Jr are:
Maz 18 Mk.II
Warmer sounding amp with a rounder low end and more low-mids.
Sounds better playing in a room by your self.
One of the best pedal-friendly amps I've ever owned.
Can get "Voxy" or even "Fendery", very versatile.
Slightly more head room.
Slightly more low end.
Z-Wreck Jr (first impressions/comparison to my old Z-Wreck Sr)
Has a very nice top end bite/cut, without ever sounding harsh.
More percussive (goes with the above comment).
Stronger mid-range.
Breaks up sooner (not as much head room).
Sounds better playing in a band situation than in a room, by yourself.
More of a 1-trick pony, but it's the best pony in the stable!
Both amps
Great cleans.
Great edge of breakup
Great natural overdrive (with the edge to the Wreck).
Both take pedals well (slight edge to the Maz).
Both have great master volumes, which I like better than an attenuator (my opinion).
Both have enough volume to hang with a loud drummer (slight edge to the Maz, but both are perfect for my needs).
I'm so happy I finally got this amp!
