Not from the '70s but I do have a 2010 Tribute Les Paul Gold Top that came w/P90s. I converted it with some Lollar Mini Humbuckers and it's a great sounding guitar. I love those Mini Humbuckers...they really punch and sing.

If you are referring to actual 70's Deluxes, I have one friend who has one and another who has two. I owned one in the early 70's but wasn't ready for that type of guitar - mainly because Jimi didn't play one. But I've borrowed one of those Deluxes about 3 years ago and was completely blown away how it sounded through my Maz 8, in Triode mode no less, and got a ton of compliments from my guitar playing friends. Since I can borrow it anytime I don't dream about having one, but if I had the money to spend on an early 70's one I'd go for it.

I’ve had this one since 1970. I bought it used. I’ve checked the year it was built might be 68 or 69. I’m not getting rid of it so I don’t worry about it much. I love the mini humbuckers. They are a nice flavor. The neck p/u is especially sweet. Mine has a nice fat wide neck. It is a slightly different flavor but not so dramatic that you can’t get what you expect from a Les Paul.

One of my jazz teachers in college had one…he’s a pro around cleveland. This thing was beat to absolute hell and I’d see him a couple times a week in lessons absolutely melt faces w that thing in any style you could imagine (thru a polytone lol).
There’s something about minis.

It's kind of fun to hear the praises of the mini humbuckers. One of the reasons you don't see a lot of deluxes from that era is that at that time folks were into the full sized humbuckers and a ton of Deluxes got routed out and had full sized humbuckers put in and many lost the deluxe truss rod cover in the switch. At shows you now see some that have been converted back with the old route filled in and the plug refinished. I have had several (not converted) over the years, all gone now. One in particular that had a broken headstock repair, sounded exceptional.

I used to have a 1969 Deluxe gold top. Was a great sounding and playing guitar. It weighed a ton tho. My back doesn't miss it. The early Deluxes were a 1 piece body with a mahogany neck. The later year models had what they call a "pancake" body which had a layer of I think maple between the mahogany and the neck was maple. The mini humbuckers were cool. The Deluxes aren't very expensive as they don't have the popularity of earlier Les Paul Standards.

Thanks for all those great responses. I pulled the trigger on one of the new Les Paul Deluxe's (dam you Sweetwater and your special financing!!) it's a Gold Top. I like that it does not have some of the quirky elements(pancake body, 3 piece maple neck, volute, etc.) of some those from the 70's.

A friend brought over a could recent les Pauls, one with the mini Humbuckers and one with p90s. I thought both sounded great, and they weren't worlds apart in sound.

Congrats! Enjoy! The guitar player in my brother's band had a Gold Top Deluxe back when I was a youngster in the mid 70's. That inspired me to also want a Gold Top. When we went shopping, they only had P90s in the used Les Pauls. Thus, I have a P90. Thank you Mom & Dad for sacrificing to buy the youngster a beautiful guitar. My Dad had to sell an old bureau he got from the Church where he worked as a janitor as a second job. If that bureau didn't sell, I would have gotten a Tele since they were $250 vs $350 for my Les Paul. The other inspiration that I got was to never, ever, ever thinking about a different finish on a beautiful worn Gold Top. That guitar player in my brother's band did a DIY refinish on his and changed it to a clear lacquer. It never looked the same again.

I’ve got a ‘73. Had a ‘68 or 69 back in high school. Great guitars… I love minihumbuckers… like a Strat on steroids.

I looked at the bursts and the lightest one is 9lbs 7oz...and it's probably a good thing. (((((M*U*S*T R*E*S*I*S*T))))) I'm a sucker for a good lookin' Gold Top.
They've got nice brown cases too.

You have to upload them to a photo hosting site like imgur and then put a link to it with the red "Reply" button.

is there anything else i can help you with today?
Would you mind holding after the call to take a short customer (dis)satisfaction survey?

That’s a nice looking guitar. Enjoy your axe. Around 1980 I changed my tuners as one of the originals was bent. I think I should find a vintage pair that look like the originals and bring it back to its original appearance.

What I really like about Gold Top guitars is the way that when the finish ages it takes on a greenish hue. I was told by an older tech that it is the bronze powder in the paint oxidizing. I read somewhere that a few years back Gibson quit using that powder. What a shame. I bought a Custom Shop '57 Reissue back in the '90s and sold it about ten years later. I know the current owner though so I have seen it recently and it is just starting to get that tint. When I bought my 1954 Gold Top it was already almost 20 years old and aged enough to look great. I can't do baseball bat necks anymore so I would be up for a '70s Deluxe if the right one came along.
