I got my Z-Lux back on Thursday and waited until today to offer my first thoughts about the upgrades. Before I start, I want to state that I loved the amp before I sent it in for the upgrades. So, don't look at my comments as too extreme. The amp is great already, but the upgrades made it better. Below are just my thoughts for what I like. Other's thoughts will be different.
1. I think the "blackface" mode does soften the amp a touch. Don't get me wrong, it's still very punchy and in your face. The "silver" mode is more like it was when I sent it off, but it is also a little different in a good way. Honestly, I prefer the "blackface" mode. 2. The reverb is much better. Everyone has said this. 3. I think the amp is smoother over all. That may be a combination of the eq update and the "blackface" mode. 4. The overdrive is greatly improved. When I got it a few months ago, I thought it didn't have enough drive, and I didn't think it was smooth. That's probably my Cure bias coming in. Now, the overdrive is smooth and there is more of it. With that said, it still takes pedals great as well. 5. The master is much better, although I thought the old master was pretty good too. 6. Boost. I didn't like the boost function when I first got it because I thought is had WAY to much bass. Now, it seems much better. That may be because the overdrive has improved and the EQ is different? I don't know, but it works much better for me. Not a much bass. 7. Dynamics. They do seem to be better.
Over all, I could play this amp without pedals and just rely on my guitar volume and the boost function. My Heritage 535's sound great though it. My Les Pauls sound great as well. With a few tweaks, my P90 guitars and Tele's sound great too.
I would recommend the upgrades. BTW, with Don's advice, I stuck with the 6V6s.
