Hoooowee! I’ve been around the bend a few times with this amp, as evidenced by some of my old posts from a couple years ago about it. And I just had another rather rash bug up my fanny to sell it a couple days ago, and listed it here on the forum and got a quick response and near sell to Simpleton, but fortunately, before completing a deal with him, I pulled it out and A/B’ed it in my favorite amp line up and ….. Holy Moly this amp really freaking rocks!!!! It’s a little darker than I usually prefer, with what seems to me to be a lot of low mids in it (and you can’t dial that out), but that actually is what makes it so special and different than all my other amps. And the distortion is the smoothest you can get from an amp plugged straight in, no pedals. So freaking smooth!!!! Really is nice jacked up, but with the guitar volume rolled back for rhythm. Really great vibe.
A major mistake, had I let her go. And to his credit, Simpleton was VERY generous and understanding about me pulling it off the for sale board, though I fear he had his hopes dashed a bit. A kind hearted soul is he.
Anyway, I can’t wait to gig this amp again!

I am glad you rediscovered the DB4. It is one of my favorite Z amps.
I still can't understand why this amp wasn't more popular before it was discontinued. I have a red 1x12 DB4 and gig it a lot. The tone is so thick and awesome with a tele. The usual response from guitar players who hear it is "Wow a Dr Z. Nice. I never heard of that model but it sounds killer."
I run the 1x12 combo with a Celestion Gold with the volume on 7 and use my guitar volume to clean it up. Of course it is louder than all heck so I use a Fryette Power Station to keep it quiet with a delay pedal in the effects loop.

You guys do realize the DB 4 ( Doc & Brads fourth amp collaboration ) is Brads currant favorite amp on stage. Big thick Tele tones.

Yep, Doc (hanging my head in shame), I’ve seen that on a couple of sites. There was talk in the past of you reviving this amp as an altered model or under another name. What up with that? This amp needs to come back!
And …… is it possible to add a master volume onto this amp, so one can get home volumes out of it cranked? Even on half power braked down it’s still a bit loud for the little woman in my life. (But perfect gig-with-a-drummer volume!)

Though Brad doesn't want any MASTER VOLUME..... nobody tells him to turn down, how nice huh. Right now the backorder lead time has creped to 40 weeks , that is early May 2022 for new orders. That is ridiculous but of course I'm not complaining , I look for a slow down at some point. At that time I can then think about releasing new designs, as I have 3 in the bank ready to go. Its good to be King. Z

I tried both the JJ EL84's and the 6N14N tubes. The NOS 6N14N tubes are the best sounding in this amp.

Howdy,
Is the DB-4 at half-power much different than the Ghia tonally? I already have a Ghia....

You’re killing me here. A couple years ago the Guitar Center 40 minutes away had one. I got all hot and bothered by it and couldn’t believe it was still there a few weeks later when I could get up there. So disappointed to plug in and find it wouldn’t give me any sound. Told an employee who confirmed the issue. Said it was going in for repair and never returned. I hope to play one some day with funds to pull the trigger.

Dear Dr. Z,
Do any of these 3 models on the horizon lack master volume?
